Hull FC move for Scott Prince talked up in Australian press

Post by josie andrews »

Speculation linking Hull FC with NRL half-back Scott Prince is building today, with reports in the Australian press of a possible three-year deal.

The Mail revealed yesterday that Prince, who captains Gold Coast Titans, is a potential target for Peter Gentle, along with Wests Tigers' Jacob Miller.

Director of rugby Shaun McRae has refused to distance himself from the rumours and says negotiations are "delicately poised".

Gold Coast said this afternoon Hull had put a three-year deal to Prince.

The Brisbane Times reported today that Gentle, who flies out to Australia next week, would offer 32-year-old Prince a three-year deal and Gold Coast were unlikely to stand in the way.

Meanwhile, the Courier Mail ran a back page story headlined "Bloody Hull" and said the Black and Whites would try to poach Prince from his current contract, which runs until the end of 2014.

The Titans declined to comment on the rumours and said they would clarify their position later.

Hull have stepped up their search for a top-quality half-back after red tape thwarted a bid for Castleford's England international Rangi Chase.

McRae told the club's official website the position was one of the missing pieces in the jigsaw.

He said: "We're still very much in the hunt, with a couple of options available to us.

"They're delicately poised at the moment and that's the reason why we aren't in a position to announce too much just yet, but I'm very confident that we will make another signing in that position.

"The difficulty in getting an overseas player at the moment is probably at an all-time high simply because the money has increased dramatically in the NRL and clubs are reluctant to release their players.

"However, this club demands high standards and quality players, and we'd like to be able to reward our fans for their loyalty and their support over the years and into the future as well."

Prince has played 278 games in the NRL. He has represented Australia in four tests and played five times for Queensland in the State of Origin series.

Scott Prince ready to commit to three-year deal with Hull FC

SCOTT Prince is willing to walk out of his contract with Gold Coast to join Hull FC next season.

The Black and Whites have put a three-year deal on the table for the 32-year-old Titans captain to leave the NRL for Super League.

And the Mail understands a deal looks certain to be signed and sealed this weekend, when he meets FC coach Peter Gentle face to face,

Hull's attempts to keep the name of their top half-back target quiet were blown open yesterday when the Aussie club chose to reveal their captain was being courted.

It was a move which appeared to suggest the Titans fear they will be unable to convince their star to stay.

Sources in Australia also told the Mail they believed the deal was all but done, having been ongoing for close to a month.

It is thought Prince may already have agreed basic terms on his deal with Hull, and his meeting with Gentle will be a matter of formalities and finer details.

"Gentle is flying out to meet Scott at the weekend and by all accounts it is simply a case of finalising the deal," the source told the Mail.

"Talks have been ongoing for some time and Hull have made it quite clear they are desperate for Scott's signature. He has been their top priority for a while."

Prince boasts an impressive record playing at the very highest level and has made 124 appearances for his current club.

He boasts 278 NRL appearances in a career that started in 1998 with North Queensland, and included spells at Brisbane and Wests.

He still has a year remaining on his current contract.

However, unlikely to win another long-term deal in the NRL beyond his current contract, the three-year offer from Hull looks enough to tempt him to the UK.

The capture of an NRL captain would be the biggest indication yet of the ambition held by FC owner Adam Pearson.

He has openly talked about the need to bring in a quality scrum-half to play alongside Daniel Holdsworth, and Prince's arrival would surely mark the end of Brett Seymour's time at the KC Stadium.

"We can confirm there is an offer on the table for Princey. He's got to work through that and we'll work through it with him," said Gold Coast's football manager Scott Clark.

"At the moment we've had no discussions with him. We'd have to see what Scott thinks is best for him and his future and weigh up some options.

"If Scott is keen to entertain that offer and seek a release then we've got to work through it from there."

"With all our players, if they put the effort in and are loyal to the club we'll always be loyal to them," added Titans' boss David May.

"If it was down to me, I'd have him stay but it's a short career and we'll let him decide what he wants to do.

"It's Scott's decision. He's a foundation player and captain of the club.

"He's been instrumental in creating the Titans brand. He came to the club and made us what we are."

They must be offering a lot of money if they can take such a fundamental player away from an NRL team - unless Titans have decided its time to freshen up their team, which given the last couple of seasons might not be a bad idea.

Another long term signing for Hull I note.

Why don't they learn there lesson and bring one of their own highly rated youngsters through instead of paying huge amounts for a 32 year old on a 3 year deal. Or are they trying to take the mantle of "oldest rugby team in Super League" off Leeds

Broncos confirm Prince pick-up

Scott Prince has joined the Brisbane Broncos just hours after his departure from rivals Gold Coast was made official.

The star halfback, who still had one season left to run on his contract with the Titans, has joined the Red Hill club on a two-year deal.

Prince played 29 games for Brisbane between 2001 and 2003, before stints with North Queensland, Wests Tigers and Gold Coast.

His decision to remain in the NRL and not join English club Hull blindsided Titans CEO David May, who admitted it was 'not on the agenda' last week.

Titans coach John Cartwright has defended the decision to release his former captain, which has left the tourist strip side without a first-choice halfback for 2013.

Prince's messy divorce from the club he helped build stems from a meeting last Wednesday when he was told the Titans would not renew his deal beyond next season.

Cartwright said he had expected the 32-year-old to be at pre-season training next week until this very public saga unfolded.

"He had a contract with us and in the meeting we had I outlined the fact that he was a major part of our plans for 2013," Cartwright told reporters on Wednesday.

"As you can see, we haven't gone out and sourced another halfback."

Prince was the driving force behind the Titans' late push for a finals spot this season, and departs the club with some solid form behind him.

That leaves only unproven trio Aidan Sezer, Jordan Rankin and Albert Kelly on the club's books as halves options.

But Cartwright insisted it was Prince's age - and not Gold Coast's salary cap situation - that had squeezed the former face of the club out.

"You're all rugby league people here, I think you'd all realise that to commit to 2014 at the end of 2012, for anyone at 33 or 34 years of age, is a big ask," he said.

"I know it's big news because he's the face of the club but every player who has laced on a boot in the NRL gets to this stage in their career.

"I'll stand on that. At this stage it was too early to commit. Most players in that position who think they can keep playing are going to try and keep playing."

May expressed regret at the manner of Prince's departure, and said he will leave a big hole.

"It is a real sad day for the club. It's not just what he does on the field. Scott is the face of the club," he said.

"My own son follows rugby league because of what he saw in Scott Prince.

"None of us are happy with the way it's been reported and none of us are happy with the endless speculation and headlines that have been written that have now been proven to be factually incorrect."

May also said Gold Coast have not approached any other player as a replacement for Prince.

"Anybody who says differently to that is not telling the truth," he said.

"We've been acting throughout this, as far as I'm concerned, with a great deal of integrity, openness, and we've tried to do the right thing by Scott."
