It's nothing like it. No one is suggesting they be banned from the game or ostracised. The vast majority of Union converts were Welsh and converted because they couldn't earn a living playing RU at all. They weren't contracted to their clubs and it was no different to an amateur RL player signing full time.

In any case the particular contract under discussion I mentioned i.e. Sam's has nothing to do with any of that anyway. This is a contract framed to ensure he remained a Wigan player for three years in full knowledge of the circumstances whereby players are approached to break contracts early (like Joel). That is how it was portrayed by the club and if it fails to keep him for three years despite the no-tamper clause it will look stupid.
Far better to plan, predict movements. Players going to the NRL is far better than to Union. Contract length will it seems be lengthened too E.G Faz to protect the clubs interests / assets. The contract cannot stop players wanting to leave BUT it will offer compensation / favourable option if the player decides to return. The NRL option is great for GB / England IMO.
What is the use of compensation if a club loses its best players? It really doesn't make a great deal of difference if they go for free or if the club gets a fee. They are still gone.

I'd rather have had Mossop for another year and let him go for free than live in hope he might come back in a couple of years.
Quite happy re Long returning. I think fans do not realise how much more we invest in our coaching staff than other clubs do. Leopard / spots etc is nonsense; look at Ellery or Jon Clarke.
God knows why. The man is of known poor character, admits it in his book and is up before the beak for assault in June. It's OK to write about being an idiot if you have reformed but the evidence he has reformed is where?
I am underwhelmed by Powell mainly because of his age. I think the club are quite clever to hit the media with umpteen announcements. It is annoying to fans as nothing stays secret beforehand and statements are made beforehand that make players / coaches look at best jackasses, at worst liars. However, the all in one go gives people / media lot to digest and less time/energy to focus on the more risk parts of the deals E.G Powell.
It's very good at spin that is for sure.
Wigan RLFC have done well IMO to react to a changing environment in RL.
And the spin has even got you fooled.

The idea in the face of the seeming weakness of contracts you claim to have got a player to sign a bullet proof one that then proves otherwise (should that occur) means the apologies need to be coming from the club!
Getting a player to sign a contract has a twofold benefit for the club. First it secures the services of the player for a certain period, and second, it makes the player worth something to the club should he decide he wants to go, or if the club wants him to go.

The alternative is that the player remains obligated to the club for its entire term, and then he walks away for free at the end of it under the Bosman rules. The club has in that case lost a valuable asset for absolutely no financial gain, and that is not good business
We all know that.

The issue is Sam's contract which has been framed in a particular way. It is in fact a five year deal to 2016 with a three year anti-tampering clause.

His contract states he can't talk to clubs, it says nothing about IFL not being allowed to talk to clubs. Clever move as it puts the club in the driving seat to get the best result for when he goes.
Why would the club or IFL want him to leave earlier than the end of the 2014 season which is when the three year anti-tampering clause expires? He is still contracted to Wigan in 2015 and 2016 and so the club remains in the driving seat. So there is no argument about having to cash in so early.

It was all over the press that Wigan had tied him to the club for three years and a strict interpretation of words that a solicitor might use won't get IL off the hook if he lets him go before the three years is up.

They've certainly over the hill where their team is shrinking by the hour. Meli injured and facing a long ban. Wilkin 2 match ban, Gardner 1 match and now we learn Flash's season is over. If London don't turn em over this weekend there's summat wrong!

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Not happy about long coming here; it's nothing to do with what he did at saints, it's because he's a bad apple and if he hasn't sorted himself out by now; then I don't see him suddenly becoming responsible, let alone some beacon of virtue.

His life and career are littered with examples of him making very poor decisions - his upcoming court appearance the latest example. Why we would want him around young impressionable men is beyond me. I wouldn't trust him to look after a half eaten Cornish pasty.

Comparing him to Ellery is inaccurate. Ellery has/had a burning desire to be the absolute best at any cost - long appears to be interested in himself first and last. This is a player that bet against his own club and didn't have the common sense to keep his mouth shut about it. If that was his "beloved" saints, then think what he'd do to Wigan given the chance.

No one doubts his ability as a player (as hard as that is to say); however, he always struck me as a "natural" player, rather than someone who spent hours working tirelessly to improve ala KR.

IMHO he is only coming to Wigan because of the likely wage he can get here and the fact that he had to leave Salford's millionaire financed gravy train with the arrival of Noble. No Noble at Salford, he wouldn't be here. I find it very unlikely that he cares one jot about Wigan - in direct contrast to SW and KR.

Seeing him wear the Wigan badge will never feel right for me and will be hard to swallow(in the same way it did to see Millward wear it).

Personally I hope his stay at Wigan is not a long one. (no pun intended)

I agree with you about Longy, Matt. As a player he was a mecurial talent and I loved to hate him, mainly because he was so good. He may also be the makings of a decent coach, but his lackings as a human being, I feel outweigh his specialist knowledge and insights.

How has he got any credability as an authority figure to young players, when his freely admitted failings include drugs, insider betting, mutliple assaults on women and p*ssing the bed of the GB coach. Do as I say, not as I do??

He's no role model, that's for sure.

So, it would seem Wigan have signed a new player for Wales and the Scorpions.
I don't imagine we'll be seeing much of Mr Powell in cherry and white.
Didn't Lenegan also say he was targeting signing a union player every year and that he expects six or seven Wigan players to go to Australia?
If so our club could really be going down the toilet.
