Wigan Warriors made it a super seven Super League wins on the spin to maintain their position at the top of the Super League table with a 46-6 win over the Salford City Reds at the DW Stadium on Friday evening.

The home side opened up a 22-0 interval lead with five first half tries without reply, just one conversion from Josh Charnley after Matty Smith had missed with the first four attempts showed the home sides superiority as Wigan completed a Super League double over their Greater Manchester rivals.

In the second half the cherry and whites continued dominance as both Josh Charnley and Sam Tomkins added to their first half touchdowns with another try apiece.

Wigan scored nine tries in total and will have also been pleased to limit Salford to very few opportunities at the other end, the Reds scoring just once in the dying moments.

Wigan were without Winger Pat Richards who missed out with a slight leg injury and Gil Dudson pulled out of the squad with a late strain and was replaced on the bench by Epalahame Lauaki who made his 2013 debut after a niggling injury which was picked up in pre-season. Salford Coached by Brian Noble included ex-Wiganers Martin Gleeson, Wayne Godwin, Stephen Wild and Jordan James in their seventeen.

It took the Warriors less than 2 minutes to open their account, Darrell Goulding with the break down the right from a quick Sam Tomkins pass and Josh Charnley was in support to race away for the try, Charnley still with work to do as he powered over Reds Full Back Marc Sneyd. Matty Smith missed a difficult conversion but Wigan were 4-0 to the good.

On 8 minutes the home side were in again, this time a great off-load from Skipper Sean O'Loughlin put Prop Ben Flower through a gap and he had the pace to beat Sneyd to the line for the Warriors second try of the evening. Smith again missed the extras, 8-0.

A swift move this time to the left on 14 minutes stretched Salford once more and Anthony Gelling was able to squeeze in for the try in the corner for the Warriors third try of the game, unfortunately Gelling was forced to leave the field after scoring with what looked to be a hand or wrist injury. Again the conversion was missed, Wigan 12-0 to the good almost in as many minutes. Hughes on to replace Gelling in the Centre with Thornley moving onto the Wing.

The one way traffic of scoring continued, Lauaki with his first touch driving forward and tackled before the home side moved it to the right and Sam Tomkins was on hand to sidestep over for the touchdown, again Smith missed the goal, 16-0.

With just a couple of minutes of the half left Wigan extended their lead, Blake Green with a good off -load and Liam Farrell was on hand in support to cross for the try. This time Josh Charnley took the goal kick which sailed over to make it 22-0 at the interval.

Josh Charnley was in for his second try of the game and his 17th of the season on 50 minutes as Wigan simply had too much pace and stretched the Reds out wide with a swift passing movement. Charnley only had one thing in mind when he received the ball 20 metres out and that was to show his speed to the corner. Charnley added a superb goal, two from two to make it 28-0.

Lee Mossop scored Wigan's seventh try of the game from close range on 56 minutes, the England Internationals First Try of the season under the posts to leave a simple goal for Charnley, 34-0 and the home side were well in control of the contest and on their way to the win with relative ease.

Sam Tomkins scored his second of the game on 63 minutes, this time Josh Charnley with an inside pass to send the Full Back through, Josh Charnley brought up the 40 with his 4th conversion in a row.

Matty Smith had left the field with a shoulder injury with the incident put on report before Wigan grabbed their 9th try of the contest with 8 minutes remaining as the influential Blake Green scored a try after more pressure and Josh Charnley again hit the two points, 46-0.

Salford scored a late consolation try through Adam Walne with less than two minutes left which Marc Sneyd converted and it ended 46-6.

A dominant and confident win once more for the Warriors on home soil which sets Wigan up now for the next round of the Tetley's Challenge Cup and a trip to Hull KR next weekend.

Super League: Wigan 46-6 Salford

WIGAN (22) 46
Tries: Charnley 2, Tomkins 2, Flower, Gelling, Farrell, Mossop, Green Goals: Charnley 5

SALFORD (0) 6

Brian Noble endured a painful return to Wigan as the Super League leaders ran in eight tries to batter struggling Salford at the DW Stadium.

Sam Tomkins and Josh Charnley, who also kicked five goals, both crossed twice.

Brian Noble, who won three Grand Finals, three World Club Championships, and a Challenge Cup at Bradford, spent three seasons in charge of Wigan between 2007 and 2009, but failed to win any silverware

There were also tries for Ben Flower, Anthony Gelling, Liam Farrell, Lee Mossop and Blake Green.

Only a last-minute try for interchange Adam Walne, improved by Marc Sneyd, prevented Salford from being 'nilled' by Wigan for a second time this season.

Wigan won 42-0 when the two sides last met at the City of Salford Stadium on the opening day of the season.

New Salford coach Noble, up against his old club, recalled on-loan St Helens utility back Lee Gaskell after three matches out through injury, the only change to the side that last week beat bottom club Castleford, after which the Reds were charged with fielding 14 men.
