Noble's Reds warning: Shape up or ship out

Post by josie andrews »

Salford Reds coach Brian Noble is poised to make a decision on the futures of 10 players as he bids to halt the club's slide.

Brian Noble is ready to make the toughest decisions of his Salford career so far to restore pride and credibility in his team.

The City Reds chief has been locked in talks with his unsettled players since Monday’s tame surrender against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. And in the next 48 hours Noble will tell up to 10 players who are out of contract at the end of the year if they have a future at the club.

“I am generally not one for using the big stick,” he told M.E.N. Sport. “I much prefer to dangle a carrot. However, now I am prepared to take the iron fist out of the velvet glove.

“By the end of the week I hope all issues will have been resolved.

“There will be a clear way forward for the rest of the season so we can make the very best of our final nine games. Those who don’t want to be here can go now.

“I had a long day on Tuesday speaking to the players collectively. And since then I have been speaking to them on an individual basis.

“I realise that when you are talking about livelihoods it can be quite unnerving. Fears we have in life come from uncertainty.

“There has been a lot of change at this club and people generally don’t like change. I also understand a lot of players are in the game just for the money. That’s okay if money motivates you. But surely there has got to be a fun element with it too?”

Noble, however, is in a tough position. His squad lacks depth in experience at Super League level. By potentially allowing players to leave now weakens it even more and risks further hammerings of the magnitude of Wakefield (46-10) and previously Warrington (68-10).

However the time for excuses stops when Salford return against St Helens on June 21.

Prop Shannan McPherson, who signed a contract extension until 2015 earlier this year, will be fit to face Saints at the Salford City Stadium.

The Aussie forward suffered concussion in the first half against Wakefield and didn’t play any further part in his first game for three months after a knee injury.

“It was great to see the aggression Shannon offers us,” said Noble. “I thought with him and Darrell Griffin back, we had more of a presence up front.”

However, there’s no likely early return for Lee Jewitt, one of the players seeking a new deal for next season and beyond, after he fractured his foot earlier in the season.

Never had Nobby down as an axe man, don't think he will be too comfortable in that role. He is probably under pressure himsel from Dr Koostark to make a silk purse from a sow's ear because let's face it, the 'big names' haven't exactly beat a path to Salford!

Salford City Reds are docked two points by the Rugby Football League for fielding 14 players against Castleford Tigers.

The club, who will drop below London Broncos to the bottom of Super League, are also fined £5,000 by the governing body. The punishment comes after they appealed an original £10,000 fine handed out by the RFL.

More pressure for Noble to motivate or axe certain players

Salford City Reds deducted two points for fielding 14 players

Salford City Reds have had two points deducted and been fined £5,000 for fielding an extra player during a Super League game against Castleford.

A Rugby Football League (RFL) tribunal increased the club's original punishment after rejecting their appeal on Friday.
Salford, who are now bottom, were given a £10,000 fine at a hearing on 8 May.

Darrell Griffin and his replacement Vic Mauro were both involved in tackles in the 77th minute of the 27 April match.

It meant that the City Reds, who won the televised game 34-30 to climb off the bottom of the table at the time, had 14 players on the field.

They were deemed to be in breach of three RFL rules.
The punishment drops them one point behind London Broncos at the bottom of Super League.

The RFL investigated the case after Castleford lodged a formal complaint, with chief executive Steve Gill claiming that three plays took place while Salford had an extra man on the pitch.

Warrington's former England coach Tony Smith had criticised the RFL for initially failing to dock the Reds points.
"I would hate to have lost that game because our opponents had an extra man out there," he said.

"I just think it sends out a poor message, that if you are prepared to pay for it then you can get away with it."
When 14 men have faced 13

In 2006 St Helens were charged with misconduct after a similar incident against Hull and were fined £100
In Australia in 2009, Canterbury Bulldogs forfeited winning points against Penrith for fielding 14 players during their 28-26 victory

Just had to pinch this from RLfans
I guess whatever Tony Smith says, goes. I wonder what his thoughts are on the Huddersfield player Danny Brough? Hang on...

He's right. An extra man on the pitch for 3 whole tackles might have helped them win the GF last year!
