And that is the problem. He needs to get those competitive games elsewhere. Not in the first team. We can't afford to use the first team for basic training purposes.Whelley Warrior wrote: Powell is on of the few since Union went professional in 1996 and in my opinion will make it with experience which he only get by playing in competitive games.
And by "basic training" I mean just that. He needs to learn the game and it is totally unfair to give him a 1st 17 slot when we have younger players coming through who do know how to play RL already who would also benefit from playing in the 1st team.
If Powell can feature in a game given his novice status then so can Greenwood or Spencer.
Powell needs to go in loan if somewhere like Leigh will have him so he can learn the basics without compromising the first team.
I suspect he won't and will be unduly favoured selection-wise not because he warrants it but because of who he is. An ex-union pro player touted as showing the movement between the codes isn't all one way.
We get a salary cap dispensation for him as well as the RFL have relaxed the rules about players new to the game having to be below a certain age.
I reckon there are too many factors not related to how good a RL player he is for him to have to win his place in the side fair and square. He will IMO be picked not on merit but because of who he is. He will be given every opportunity to improve in a way other players would not be.
