Michael Maguire signs new deal with South Sydney Rabbitohs

Post by josie andrews »

Former Wigan coach Michael Maguire has agreed a new contract with South Sydney that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2017 season.

The 39-year-old led the Warriors to both Grand Final and Challenge Cup wins in his two seasons in charge before moving to the Rabbitohs in 2012.

"I'm really pleased to have re-signed here, at such a great club, and to have the opportunity to continue to work on everything we've been doing for an extended period," he said.

Maguire led the Rabbitohs to within one game of the NRL Grand Final in his first season in charge but last campaign, after leading the table at the mid-point, they faded and to finish second and lost in the Grand Final qualifier to Manly Sea Eagles.

Meanwhile, former Castleford forward Richie Fa'aoso has announced his retirement from the sport due to a fractured vertebrae suffered in the aforementioned encounter between the Sea Eagles and South Sydney.

The 29-year-old, who played in Super League for the Tigers in 2006, had one year remaining on his contract with the Sea Eagles.

"It's an unfortunate situation for Richie and his family," said Sea Eagles general manager David Perry.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
