Souths or Brisbane for Wigan in WCC

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors will face either South Sydney Rabbitohs or Brisbane Broncos in the World Club Series next year.

The winners of the 2014 Super League Grand Final, will host South Sydney Rabbitohs in the World Club Challenge after Michael Maguire's side ended their 43-year wait for the Australian title when they defeated Canterbury Bulldogs 30-6 last Sunday.

The runners-up will host Brisbane Broncos, who have been crowned World Club Champions twice.

Whilst the third game will see Warrington Wolves face off with St George-Illawarra after the pair were confirmed as the final two teams to join the expanded series.

South Sydney are participating in the World Club Series as NRL champions whilst Brisbane Broncos and St George-Illawarra have accepted invitations to be involved in the new-look format.

Super League General Manager Blake Solly said: "I am delighted that we are able to host three clubs of the stature of South Sydney, Brisbane Broncos and St George-Illawarra in the inaugural World Club Series next year.

"With their strong English connections through the Burgess brothers, the 2014 Australian champions will be a huge drawcard for the World Club Challenge and I am sure the chance to face the Rabbitohs will provide added incentive to St Helens and Wigan Warriors in Saturday's Super League Grand Final.

"Brisbane Broncos have been strong supporters of the World Club Series from the outset: no Australian club has a stronger pedigree in World Club Challenges than the Broncos and they will provide formidable opposition for the Super League runners-up.

"Having tasted success in the 2011 World Club Challenge, it is fitting the Dragons are the third representative from the NRL. The Dragons have a unique place in the history of the sport and Super League fans will look forward to seeing them in the series.

"With Wigan Warriors, St Helens and Warrington Wolves confirmed as Super League's participating clubs, excitement is already building for the tournament.
"Not only will the World Club Series pitch club against club, but Super League against NRL in a fascinating competition between two leagues and two hemispheres."

NRL Head of Football Todd Greenberg said the new format would add interest to the World Club Challenge.
"Fans already love seeing the best from Australia play the best from Britain," he said. "But this tournament will showcase three of the top clubs in the NRL.
"It is a chance for our teams to go head-to-head with the best in the UK to determine the best Rugby League clubs in the world."

Details of ticket prices and availability for the three matches in the World Club Series will be announced later this year.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It is a great pity that other than Souths, the best teams from the NRL are not interested.

So why extend the competition if it does not involve the top three Aussie clubs from their competition?

Wane v Madge as well.
Footballers spend 90 minutes pretending they're injured. Rugby League players spend 80 minutes pretending they're not.

Where did you hear that? Next season's set of games is just a tester with talks already held about actually bringing Origin here also. To say that the top NRL sides aren't interesting in promoting their clubs over here is small minded to say the least.
More fans = more money, do you really think football clubs like Utd & LFC want to do tours in Asia. Russell Crowe mentioned this in an interview and spoke about how he has been pushing to get NRL exposure over here, plus the NRL & RFL have already spoke about some of our clubs taking part in the 9's.

Not everything is negative

Quite sad really. The ARL / NRL are quite happy functioning without international RL. At a time they should be leading they simply drag their feet.

It was the same for our trip to NZ/Oz this year. They paid our costs.
