i think you'll find geoff he went to scrum half when gregory got injured and because of how good edwards played any grgory couldnt get his place back and he left because of it, or so i'm told
You were told wrong.

I think Edwards started at no. 2 (right wing) and also played 3 (right centre). A young Hampson broke his leg and Edwards had an extended run at FB. We had other half back options in Gary Stevens and Mike Ford.

Gary Stevens, Mike Ford, Andy Gregory, Bobby Goulding and Martin Crompton have all played regular scrum half at Wigan while Edwards was there.Indeed Greg was injured for a tour to NZ and Goulding replaced in the GB squad as first choice scrum half so at that moment in time Edwards was third choice as scrum half at Wigan but was continually playing stand off.

Kenny, Ella and Hanley all played stand off regulary whilst Edwards was in the team at full back.

Edwards has a record that will be unsurpassed in RL history, but to my mind ( I'm talking now of absolute best players) he was always second fiddle to someone in whatever position he played and enjoyed no success away from Wigan and seemed to play all his rugby from the bench wherever he went.

Boy I wish we had him now. :)

At his peak, he was our first choice standoff...the Edwards/Gregory partnership stood for 5 of our 8 CC wins ('88 - '92), as well as the Manly game in '87
