Wane knows rivals are out to get him

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane says rival sides continue to raise their game against his men but he relishes the challenge and has come to expect this

Shaun Wane is fully expecting the Castleford Tigers to bust a gut on Friday night to try and beat his Wigan Warriors side.

Wane knows rival teams continue to raise their game against Wigan and is expecting no different from the Tigers in what promises to be an intriguing contest.

The Wigan boss has come to expect the added incentive for rival outfits of trying to capture Wigan’s prize scalp.

‘‘Hull KR raised their game last weekend and Widnes also did in the opening game,’’ said Wane.

‘‘We also saw in pre-season what beating us meant to Leigh.

‘‘Rovers left the dressing room door open to make sure we could hear them celebrating.

‘‘They were shouting their heads off.

‘‘We deserved something from the game and we will learn a lot from it.

‘‘My message is quite simple - keep hold of the ball and we will win more games.

‘‘My lads have been in a tough place this week.

‘‘We put too much pressure on ourselves at the weekend.

‘‘Our attack was good but the skill level and completion rate was poor.

‘‘We know what we have to work on.

‘‘We are coming up against a low-risk Castleford side who are well coached and very competitive especially at home.

‘‘Lee Mossop carried the ball well for us last time out.

‘‘He needs to work on his defence.

‘‘Larne Patrick also played well but we have to become smarter with the ball.

‘‘Mossop has added size to our pack.

‘‘From what I have seen so far, it is a very even competition. The games have been closely contested.

‘‘All I really ask for is for the referees to be strong.

‘‘They have to make instant decisions.

‘‘It is a tough job.

‘‘I have refereed myself and know what it is like.’’

Wigan are still without their injured skipper Shaun O’Loughlin but are battling on.

Wane says any side in the NRL would miss O’Loughlin.

The Wigan boss puts him up there with Ellery Hanley in terms of being the complete loose forward.

O’Loughlin has so many strings to his bow.

Wane adds: ‘‘Lockers is awesome in defence.

‘‘He runs hard but he handles like a back and also kicks.

‘‘There are not many like him - he is certainly a specialist in the role.

‘‘It is also a role I like my teams to have.’’

Dan Sarginson is expected to return at Castleford but Dom Crosby may miss out.

Matty Bowen is back after being rested.

The determined form of young Ryan Sutton delights Wane who is keen to make sure his rising stars are not overplayed.

They will be rested when Wane thinks the time is right to withdraw them from the front line.

Wane also knows that Wigan must not concede silly penalties at Castleford where the crowd can very often influence the man in the middle.

This backs up his call for strong refereeing.

The Wigan boss certainly does not think there is anyone out to get at Wigan and shows not let-up in his passionate style.

Wane admits he continues to be the toughest of task masters.

Ryan Sutton, George Williams and other youngsters are seeing at first hand just how high the standards are he sets for all his players.

In many ways, Wigan still remain in transition but as Wane says, they also remain the team everyone still wants to beat.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Did JC write that?
Can't even be bothered to read it, but in response to the headline - they are out to get 3 points, because they've sussed out your system and how to wind you and your team up.

Was it an insult? or a question?

Turning the other cheek, as I am also a fan of sarcasm.

Have a great night and enjoy the game.
Would've tuned into WishFM, but with the 3 hour time difference and my alarm set at 6am, it's a bridge too far.

Thanks :D
