We're Working Hard to fix Things - Wane

Post by josie andrews »

Shaun Wane has reassured Wigan fans that his players and coaching staff are working overtime to help the team overcome their start to the season.

Wigan have picked up three points from a possible eight and the players put in some extra work at the weekend as they look to get back to winning ways.

Last time out the Warriors went down 42-14 to Castleford and Wane admitted the defeat did come as a shock: "We trained well all week," he said. "It was a short turnaround, we only had one session out on the field so we've gone from Brisbane to Hull KR and then travelling to Castleford having just one session to fix what we did at Hull KR so it was a combination of a few things.

"We were a bit soft, we didn't look after the ball, there were a few technical things in contact and we were beaten by the better team. Sometimes you just have to hold your hand up. They wanted it more, they ran harder, they controlled the ball better and we were beaten in every department and I'm the first to admit that. It dipped below the standards that I will accept and the same with my players, we've been in every day over the weekend, we are working hard to make sure we're doing the best we can."

Wane admitted his team's start to the game was particularly frustrating: "You can't allow teams like that to go 10-0 up on you, we gave ourselves too much to do, we didn't get anything and we didn't deserve it. It was different to Hull KR where we could have and should have won the game. This game we were beaten in every facet."

The Warriors Head Coach admits he never feels the need to pick out individual players in the changing room after the match. "I don't point them out, they know. They don't shy away from that, it wasn't acceptable and that's been dealt with. The one thing about my players is they are very honest and they do understand our standards and we dipped below them. Our edge defence wasn't good enough and just nowhere near the standard that I want."

Wigan have started the past few seasons slowly with Wane admitting it wasn't an acceptable situation: "To be honest we never start well and that's something I'm trying to fix. The fact is we're not the biggest team, compared to some Super League teams we're small and we're athletic which never lends itself to starting well because we're playing against bigger teams that are fit but we seem to finish well because of that reason.

"It's not an acceptable situation but it is what it is, we recruit the way we have because I like certain players playing a certain way and sometimes that has a knock on affect but the way we've started this year, even though it's not much different to last year and the year before, when Wigan lose people get more stressed than any other club."

Wane confirmed that Ryan Sutton and Joe Burgess could return to his squad for Friday's game with Hull FC with Dom Crosby a week away from recovering from a knee injury. Captain Sean O'Loughlin continues his recovery from recent knee surgery and hopes to return in three to four weeks.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I have not posted anything lately as I am still shell shocked from the HKR 2nd half never mind what happened at Cas and can't get my head round how we have gone from Grand Finalists to whipping boys, I don't believe it is just the loss of Blake Green as we played a large part of last season without him. The bit I have made bold above seriously worries me though. As a coach it is your job to find different ways of playing to suit the conditions and the squad you have available. The same style of play just will not work all year round.

Depends on context. Is he means he likes his players playing a certain way as in 100% in every game, total commitment, pushing themselves to be better (which is what Wane does want from how his articles read/direct quotes) then it's perfectly fine.

If it's I want them to play a set method/tactic and never change to the circumstances, then yes that would be a issue.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

And there lies the problem because IMO that is wanes mind set which is worrying, he's still trying play the same game plan he was using with a much stronger team instead of changing/adapting to suit the players he has at his disposal. I don't believe he can change the game plan, for one he's too stubborn too, and he's not got the tactical brain power too.[/b]
