When did we last sign a top drawer player?

Post by East Stand Faithful »

We seem to only sign experiments like Gelling these days or the likes of Bowen who was retiring from the NRL.

When did we last sign a top player? Hoffman and co in the madge era?

Wigan is renowned for blending local youth with top class players. Is this now a thing of the past?

Is super league deteriorating to the extent we cannot sign a decent overseas player or is it Ian leneghan being a tight bugger?

Did Anthony Gelling not come strongly recommended by Dean Bell?
If true then surely the signing of Gelling is based on sound judgement of an experienced ex Wigan player/coach who is well respected.

Anthony Gelling has been a brilliant signing. He's hard working and makes the metres. Yes he makes some errors but we have to remember he is only a young player.

And granted we may not have signed any big name players recently but is there a single wigan fan that wouldn't consider Bateman an amazing catch?

What about Sarge? Come to us from London ends up a England international.

Tony clubb has proven himself and steps up to the mark when needed.

I would say no we haven't signed any big names recently but we have signed quite a few player that have proven themselves for us and are the future big names of superleague
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Signings have been excellent, except MB. Given a second year, started the year much as before,no worse than last year, then dropped. Where is the logic in that? Never sign specialist full back, especially one topping up pension. Winger/full backs give more flexibility.

Just read all the posts in this thread and bar the still rumoured re-signing of Sam T none of the names mentioned fit the bill as to what the o/p was on about.

There also seems to be a bit of selective memory also when saying signing have been excellent. Have names like like Mathers, Pryce, Lauaki and Andy Powell been eradicated from the Wigan past players list?

Players like Clubb and Sarge are decent signings but certainly not top drawer which is what the o/p was on about. Gelling is just poor but gets the raps because he gives 110%. He is exactly the kind of project the o/p was on about yet he is holding down a 1st choice slot because there simply isn't anyone else.

The best singing made recently was Bateman and prior to that Taylor but for whatever reason that went wrong.

Most of our signings have been average to good but is there a game changer amongst them? I don't think so. Even Sarge is inconsistent despite having been called up for England.
