Matty Smith Kicking Stats
Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
I agree our kicking game as a whole is just poor - you think we would have a good kicking game with deacon. I understand place kicking is a specialist skill and smith just doesn't have it - its like charnley all over again never wanted to be the kicker but was forced to anyway. you think they would have an hour and see who is the best goal kicker it cannot be smith surely out of the whole team!
Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
At the beginning of the season they regularly held goal kicking competitions in training and Smith consistently came out on top. Don't know if they still do this.bomhead wrote:You think they would have an hour and see who is the best goal kicker it cannot be smith surely out of the whole team!

Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
Forget his kicking stats the most alarming stats are his strike play and poor defensive record compared to Ryan Hampshire. Bear in mind Hampshire has played just a handful of games so ignore the defensive comparison but on the other side of the coin smith has played every game and achieved the following attacking stats.
These are for the season so far:
M.Smith
Tries:3
Clean Breaks:6
Average Gain:4.29 Metres
Offloads:5
Missed Tackles:40
R.Hampshire
Tries:3
Clean Breaks:5
Average Gain:6.64
Offloads:7
Missed Tackles:9
SO I ASK THE QUESTION WHY IS HE STILL BEING PICKED???? SURELY NOT FOR HIS GOAL KICKING BECAUSE BOTH HAMPSHIRE AND WILLIAMS CAN KICK.
Then lets compare him to Williams who some happy clappers on here early in the season were saying wasn't ready, wasn't Wigan standard.
G. Williams
Tries:4
Clean Breaks:10
Average Gain:6.55
Offloads:22
Missed Tackles:25
I thought senior players were supposed to lead from the front.

Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
I think it's hard to compare them in that respect as Hampshire has only played full back this year and Smith has only played scrum half. Had these stats been for the same position then the stats would be alarming.Tuigamala wrote:Forget his kicking stats the most alarming stats are his strike play and poor defensive record compared to Ryan Hampshire. As a like for like comparison, he should be in ahead of Bowen any day.

and there is the reason Stats alone are useless, its doesnt show what else the player does. the above one also dont take in to account, the completed Tackles, amount of games.Tuigamala wrote:Forget his kicking stats the most alarming stats are his strike play and poor defensive record compared to Ryan Hampshire. i disagree with people about smith place kicking, it is from what ive seen on Par with most of halfs, yes occasionally he may disappear (when the entire team is playing rubbish i would add) but he is constantly barking orders guiding the team, and he has good game management.
his goal kicking is sub par from the left hand side that is it. his stats have plumitted since gelling got injured and all of out tries started coming from the left and very little from the right
and Hampshire can kick??? he hasnt shown this in game, even warming up his kick off attempts were rubbish and i mean 1 in 3 were acceptable, and when he did goal kick he couldnt get the distance to reach the posts.
i generally feel some fans will saying anything just to promote having hampshire in the team.... Bowen drops 2 balls, swap him for Hampshire, he never does that :doz:
smiths had a bad game lets swap him for hampshire as he can kick better, oh wait the one time he has done it.
Smith is a Solid steady player, he may not be a show stopper. but he was good enough to get into the england squad and played very well.
if we had a different goal kicker i doubt anyone would be dismissing smith so easily.
and for the Happy clapper bit
Wane/Rads/IL and whoever else is involed is signing players and keeping them on board believe smith is good enough for a long term contact, they are payed to look at stuff like this, what are they seeing that we are not.....
These are two reasons not to trust people.

2. We do know them.

Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
I don't think Rockys a FB at all he needs to be brought into the halves and use George as a replacement for MM and drop or loan powell out and put Tierney at the back or sarge
Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
Kind of proves the previous post.bomhead wrote:I don't think Rockys a FB at all he needs to be brought into the halves and use George as a replacement for MM and drop or loan powell out and put Tierney at the back or sarge
People will move players around to accommodate a player who only real claim to anything in rugby is his academy record. Pretty sure he played at 6 for us in the past when we mass rested players.
Williams has to move drop Powell and bring in a FB to accommodate 1 player who the coaches will not risk. For whatever reasons.
What next drop Flower and give him a go as a prop. He needs a chance but not at the risk of dropping points. And for people who blame Smith remember he is not the only half in the team.
Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
I personally think Sarges best position is FB and George is a better hooker than 6 so I'm not really playing players out of position I think they are better suited there.
George can mix it in the middle tackle wise and is far more elusive from dummy half.
Sarge is a lot faster so when he comes into the line at spread from FB causes all sorts of issues for defences
I don't want to accommodate players I want the best team possible

Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
No I strongly disagree with moving George from 6. Am I watching another player or has there been a better number 6 in our competition over the last 2 months? If we are going to make a change with Smith a player I almost forgot about is Powell he should get a shout at 7. He played 7 in the academy and that is his preferred position. I personally think trying to mould him into a hooker is a waste. Matty Smith calls a lot of our plays "I get that" but what else does he do?
People mention his game management but apart from the odd drop goal what else does he manage?

Re: Matty Smith Kicking Stats
although I agree that George has played really well, and is improving every game.I must say that he is mostly first receiver with smith second receiver. This is when we do most damage in my eyes. They do swap and change but George is so good at beating the first defender at first receiver, then getting the ball wide.Sarge might be a good option at fullback if all the centres get back( and on form) but I can't see this happening. As for hooker, that's easy,if wane doesn't want mm to play 80 lets just get a dynamic hooker as a replacement for our pretend hookers.Tuigamala wrote:No I strongly disagree with moving George from 6. For me it's really important that we get a settled half back and hooker combination, before the start of next season.Surely it's high on the priority list with everyone getting a tryout
