2 Good Sides but 1 Winner

A pleased Wigan Warriors Under 19s Head Coach Matty Peet says ‘there were two good sides but only one winner' in today's hard-fought win over local rivals St Helens to go top of the league.

The Cherry and Whites came from behind in the second-half to secure the two points over their neighbours, with the Warriors youngsters scoring seven tries in the tightly contested affair.

On the performance, Peet said: "I am pleased that the lads got what they deserved but I thought we paid the price in the second-half for being sloppy. I already said to the lads that Saints would have a period in the game were they were on form because they are a good team.

"There were two good sides but there's only one winner and fortunately for us, we were able to turn it around but our skill needs to be better than what it was." he added.

The academy coach wants more consistency from his side, he said: "If you have off-spells against a team like St Helens and you are not clinical in your ability then they are always going to come back and bite you and that's exactly what happened.

"However, the lads showed great character and managed to get the win which I am pleased about."

Peet was full of praise for full-back Gabriel Fell after putting in a man of the match performance, he said: "He always seems to be there at the right time which is great for us. He has got good footwork and has been outstanding this season. He is well-liked by all the lads so it is good to see him playing well."

The Head of Youth Performance thought the half-back combination between Jake Shorrocks and Lewis Heckford worked well, he said: "We know what Jake is capable of but I think Lewis has really grown into an influential role in the last two or three months and he is a pleasure to coach; he is always asking questions on how he can improve his game and he has bags of confidence and skill."

On the forwards work ethic, Peet said: "I thought all our forwards did really well. St Helens have got a big pack and I thought we matched that today. It was good to watch two forward packs that didn't hold anything back and played with a lot of pride."

Despite leap-frogging Saints in the league table to go top, Peet thinks there are improvements to be made: "We need to improve on our skill and execution in key areas of the field because we need to start putting games to bed earlier." he said.

Match Report:

Wigan Warriors Under 19s moved to the top of the league after beating local rivals St Helens 38-22 in what was a high intensity thriller at the Ad Options Stadium in Orrell.

Warriors Under 19s head coach Matty Peet made one change since the last time the academy side played which was bringing prop Paddy Jones into the starting team while leaving utility-forward Jake Moore out of the side.

The Cherry and Whites looked strong as they went into the half-time interval leading 18-0 but the Warriors let it slip in the opening 20-minutes of the second-half when Saints managed to take the lead. However, Wigan soon turned it around to win comfortably with a hat-trick from Gildart, while Shorrocks, Fell, Higginson and Shelford also got on the scoreboard.

Wigan kicked to St Helens to get the game underway and in the sixth minute of the game, the Warriors scored the opening try when half-back Jake Shorrocks passed the ball out wide to full-back Gabriel Fell who laid a well-timed flat ball off to centre Oliver Gildart who finished neatly in the left corner. Shorrocks nailed the conversion from the touchline. (6-0)

Warriors were controlling the game in the opening ten minutes as they kept forcing Saints to give away penalties with quick play-the-balls.

The Cherry and Whites were dominating Saints territory in the first 20-minutes of the game with the likes of winger Liam Marshall, loose forward Kyle Shelford and second-rower Nick Gregson all running superb lines which the away side were struggling to deal with.

In the 25th minute, the Warriors stretched their lead when Shorrocks kicked a high ball into the corner for Marshall to chase, but the winger was obstructed by Saints half-back Danny Richardson but the ball bounced back to Shorrocks for him to score under the sticks. Shorrocks converted his own try. (12-0)

On the half-hour mark, Wigan came close to scoring their third of the afternoon when forward Kieron Sherratt shrugged off several Saints players and was about to dive over the try-line when he lost control of the ball.

Wigan did get their third try in the 36th minute through full-back Fell after going on a terrific individual run with him stepping three Saints players and jinxing his way through their defensive line to score near the right corner. Shorrocks added the extras from the touchline. (18-0)

HALF-TIME: Wigan Warriors U19s 18 - 0 St Helens U19s.

St Helens kicked to Wigan to get the second-half underway but it took just minutes for Saints to open the scoring of the second-half when replacement Josh Eaves burst through the Warriors defence from ten-metres out to score beneath the sticks. Half-back Richardson converted the try. (18-6)

In the 46th minute, Saints scored their second try to come back into the game with a solo effort from half-back Richardson which saw him score under the sticks from ten-metres out. Richardson added the two points. (18-12)

St Helens made scores level in the 50th minute, when centre Calvin Wellington out-muscled the Warriors defence from five yards out to score near the touchline. Richardson added the additional points. (18-18)

In the 55th minute, Saints went in front for the first time when they shipped the ball out wide to winger Dave Ecclestone who scored in the corner with the away side having an overlap on the right edge. Richardson sliced his conversion attempt. (18-22)

However, the Warriors put their heads back into gear in the middle stages of the second-half and replied with a try of their own in the 62nd minute through Gildart after the centre intercepted a sloppy Saints pass to run 40-metres to score out wide with five Saints players not being able to catch the youngster. Shorrocks' conversion attempt went wide of the mark. (22-22)

The Cherry and Whites went back in front in the 67th minute when half-back Lewis Heckford passed the ball out wide to winger Jack Higginson who exquisitely finished the try in the right corner. Shorrocks arrowed his kick straight over the sticks from the touchline. (28-22)

In the 73rd minute, the Warriors scored through England academy captain Kyle Shelford who received an outstanding short ball from half-back Shorrocks with Shelford then running a line that Saints could not handle. Shorrocks successfully converted the try. (34-22)

Just minutes later, Wigan put the icing-on-the-cake when Josh Ganson bulldozed through Saints' defensive line and it was centre Gildart who finished the try to complete his hat-trick as he barged through the St Helens defence to go over from close range. Shorrocks failed to add the extras. (38-22)
