Some good points made in this thread about the coaching and half back deficiencies. Possibly the truth is a combination of the two?

If the coach decides he wants a rigidly structured game plan he needs to build within it some set plays for when the team is attacking in the opponents 20 metre area. If he doesn't do this, he can rely on the enterprise and flair of one or both half backs to create something to unlock the defence.

It seems to me the absence of enterprise & flair from halfback is the problem in the context of Wane's structured game plan.

I know it's a long time ago, but contrast that with how Wigan played under Graham Lowe. A highly structured game plan, but with sophisticated set plays in the playbook for different areas on the field. Of course it helped having half backs of the calibre of Edwards and Gregory to orchestrate it all.

Yes Yonner. The problems may be having too structured approach. OK for the forwards but more off the cuff for the halves allowing for greater creativity ala Widnes.

Only Wakefield and Leeds have scored less than us now. OK, Widnes, Salford and Hull KR have played a game more, but the first two of those have scored way more than us.

Our attack has been boring. Our games have been entertaining because our defence has been so good so we've kept scores down. They need to find something going forward though.

Essentially, it is far too obvious where the ball is going to go and often too lateral. We never work in and around the POTB off the hooker with several close runners, ideally in pairs. It is not hard to track/spot what Wigan will do/who the ball will go to in a set. It then boils down to players pulling off a touch of magic; a Manfredi run for example. Our completion rate has to be silly to dominate OR the opposition have to be very poor re completion. The team work their behinds off defensively.
