Jake Connor

Huddersfield utility player is out of contract at the end of the season. Looks a decent player and offers cover in a multitude of positions

Should Wigan be interested in him?

Is he?

What I read was that he had agreed terms. Nothing else! Signing not completed!

Still, probably not good enough for Wigan

The deal to bring the 21-year-old utility back to the KCOM Stadium was shrouded in some confusion over the weekend. Hull announced the capture of the player on Saturday morning in conjunction with the Mail, confirming Connor had agreed a two-year deal at the Black and Whites.

More news: Hull FC player ratings - who starred against Castleford?

However, the Mail was then informed no official contract had been signed, but Connor had actually agreed a deal in principle to sign with the club at the end of the season. Should Hull sign Connor at the end of the campaign following his 22nd birthday the club would not be legally bound to pay a transfer fee.

There has since been another twist with Thewlis making a statement in League Express newspaper about the situation.

"We made him (Connor) the largest offer ever made to player of his sage, so to have that rejected is very disappointing," Thewlis told League Express.

"We were then informed by the Hull FC media department that they had signed Jake Connor for the 2017 on Saturday. I then spoke to Motu Tony who confirmed the fact, as then a little later did Jake Connor himself, who confirmed that he had physically signed with Hull FC.

"I have agreed to meet with Motu to see if an agreement can be reached regarding the transfer fee, as whilst we are entitled under RFL regulations to a set amount there is also scope to go beyond that. This move is likely to cost Hull FC in excess of six figures."

CLUB STATEMENT: JAKE CONNOR

Hull FC have issued the following statement to reassure supporters of the situation regarding utility back Jake Connor.

The statement reads:

"Following recent information circulated in the wider media, misleading reports and comments from Richard Thewlis, the Managing Director of Huddersfield Giants, we would like to clarify the situation for our supporters.

"As announced recently, Hull FC have agreed a deal with Huddersfield Giants' talented utility back Jake Connor, who will join the club from the 2017 season.

"Jake will complete the standard formalities of his new contract with Hull FC following a medical at the end of the season as planned, which is normal procedure for the club.

"Subject to Jake passing this medical and completing the necessary paperwork, he will be a Hull FC player for next season and will join his new team mates for pre-season training.

"No compensation is deemed payable.

"We are extremely disappointed by the response from Huddersfield Giants and that Mr Thewlis felt it appropriate to air his beliefs in the media prior to discussing the matter in private with the club.

"Furthermore, these views are inaccurate in relation to the Rugby Football League Operational Rules which govern the movement of players between clubs and we are unsure why such a statement would be made without clarifying these first.

"As a club, we look to operate ethically and within the strict parameters the sports governing body demands. To have our consistent and diligent approach questioned is disappointing.

"We would like to apologise for any confusion this may have caused and for any distraction for Jake, who we would like to wish him the best of luck for the remainder of his term with the Giants.

"We will make no further public comment on this matter until Jake has completed his medical and he officially becomes a Hull FC player later this year.

"The club would like to put on record their thanks to the Rugby Football League for their prompt response in clarifying the situation and confirming our understanding and handling of the process was correct."

I have no sympathy for Huddersfield getting burned here after the way they went about signing Kopzac however you spell it from Bradford a few years ago.
