Chairman Says Thank You

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan this week signed homegrown star George Williams to a long term deal

The Warriors also handed a new deal to fans favourite Morgan Escare

Chairman explains the role season ticket holders played in both deals

Ian Lenagan has today spoken of his pride at keeping George Williams and Morgan Escare at Wigan and explained the role season ticket holders played in the deals.

“One of the reasons we are able to keep both George and Morgan at Wigan, and re-sign players like Joe Burgess and Thomas Leuluai, is because of our season ticket holders.

“Fans may feel like they are just buying a season ticket and probably underestimate the difference they are making. The role these fans play when they buy their season ticket has a much bigger impact than than many will realise which is critical to the success of the Club.

“Having a lot of season ticket holders allows us to do things that many other clubs can’t do, and the simple fact is that without fans buying season tickets we wouldn’t be able to keep players like George Williams at our Club and in Super League.

“I’d personally like to thank all of our current season ticket holders. Of course, we will keep trying to give them a great deal with lots of benefits but their purchase will have far greater benefits for their Club than they could ever imagine.”

Season tickets are still available, with prices reduced pro rata after each home game. For more information call the Ticket Office on 0871 66-33-552.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

The season ticket holders are the lifeblood of any club and IL is just stating the blatantly obvious. How you choose to take it is a personal thing.
I would assume you don't have a season ticket by your response, I, on the other hand have had one for well over thirty years. In both instances personal choice.

Lots of people can not afford a season ticket, but that's not what i was posting about. You have got a multi millionaire trying to squeeze more money out of people.I noticed Mr Lenagan did not say to much about the Widnes debacle, that got nicely brushed under the carpet.

If fans want the best players then the fans have to pick up a huge portion of the bill!! Multi millionaire owners can only put in so much money or they will soon not be multi millionaires! Like all clubs in any sport Wigan have payment plans to help pay for season tickets. Look what happened at Man Utd, people didn't want the Glazers so stopped going did it affect them no because they had a huge waiting list of fans ready to spend their money on a season ticket. Rugby league clubs on the other hand don't!! Every season ticket lost is one less supporter, eventually numbers drop and the clubs best players are sold, fans complain, stop going to games and so on. Things like this are why rugby league is struggling financially and unfortunately it does begin with us fickle fans. Imo of course!!!

What WW said. Except I've been a season ticket holder about five minutes (not literally), not thirty years!

I don't see how anyone could take the hump at what IL said.

That's what he is there for IL does his share of dipping in his pocket regardless of size so why should the fans not. The season tickets are good value for money. And sorry but not being able to afford one does not cut it with me with all options on how to purchase our season tickets available at club. I would ague that you would not buy a season ticket if you are unable to attend all games more than to do with finances. Also personal choices I have been season ticket holder for over 50 years bought my first one with my paper money 2/6 for hen pen season ticket. And regardless of disappointments not once in all that time felt as though I was being short changed or ripped off. The Widnes debacle is down to the last owners who sold us down the river without a ground. Leaving IL with is hands tied. I know who I would rather have running our club

No spectators means no atmosphere.Tv and sponsorship would stop stone dead with no atmosphere and so the paying public are just as important as the players.I think the cost is to high for the spectators and should be reduced.
Take a look at Castleford,i bet the attendance figure is half ours yet they have done great with far less money. As for keeping George,i think we all know it's a matter of when! as no doubt it will be a mega bucks sale.
I think the marquee player is unfair and a big bonus should be given to the player of the year.We should not be held to ransom and if a player wants to leave for more money then you have to let them go as it's got to be better for moral if the first teamers get roughly the same money.

Yonmon, Sport doesn't work like that ! Every team sport from RL to RU, Football, NFL, and Cricket, etc, etc. pay their top players what they are worth in the market. If these top stars only received the same as a run of the mill squad, or academy player, they'd be off to pastures new in a flash.

As for George (or anyone), he's signed a contract for 4 years, so if he did go before then, the Club would get his Contracted Transfer Fee from the open market. As for the Marquee issue, it's fairer because the rules allow everyone the same opportunity and with Wigan, we have discounts applied because of our home developed players. Paying players a Bonus for player of the year isn't workable, for numerous reasons, the main one being it's currently a "live" cap, which gives teams like ours years to plan their squads well in advance, rather than a couple or so months.

As for Cas, it's only this year they've made strides and it's still early on in the season so the jury's out until they fully justify their position. It looks better for them moving forward a season or two, when they'll move into their own new stadium, giving them higher levels of finance streams than they have currently, so that in turn should increase their SC spend.

Going onto the IL mention, he's not saying pay on the day species are not important to the club, just that Season Ticket Holders are more "valuable", in terms of pure finance. These monies are paid well in advance, so it gives the club early investment opportunities, which are vital to keep Wigan at level par, or ahead of the opposition.

I honestly don't think IL has been controversial in any way on this matter - it's the same whether we're Wigan Warriors, Liverpool FC, Saracens RU or anyone; all income received is vital and the earlier it comes, the better and more workable it is for us !

That's a fair enough reply Nezza.I do not like the season ticket being pushed on the basis of George 4year contract when the contract can be ripped up within 48 hours.
