he had a moterbike accident and injured his lower leg[shin] after 5 operations the surgens could do no more but ampitate from below the knee, he will now set another fund up i have heard.

Here, here but also one of life's tragically unlucky people. His family have been through more than their fair share of ill fortune. I understand his appearance to give out the awards has been cancelled as well.
