Hull FC denied salary cap exemption for Matty Dawson-Jones in the harshest of circumstances

Post by josie andrews »

The Black and Whites will be without the winger for the entire season

Hull FC have been told they cannot have a salary cap exemption for Matty Dawson-Jones despite losing the winger for the entire season.

The 28-year-old former St Helens and Leigh Centurions outside back has been ruled out until next season following an ACL injury at training last week. It comes as a major blow to Hull in losing one of their new signings so early into the campaign.

Currently at salary cap maximum, the Black and Whites have no room to bring in a replacement and as such sought an exemption from the RFL, who have already allowed Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers exemptions in the past few weeks due to long-term injuries for Kevin Brown and Luke Gale respectively.

Hull, however, have not been granted the same freedom on the cap because unlike Brown and Gale, Dawson-Jones has played this season.

It means the opening round derby appearance against Hull KR has been deemed enough for Dawson-Jones to be an active player in the 2019 campaign and while he will only feature in 80 minutes of the entire season, RFL rules prevent him from being eligible to be exempt from the salary cap, with no dispensation given despite the severity of the injury and timing.

Had the new arrival not featured in the derby, Hull would have stood a good chance of receiving an exemption to allow them to bring in a replacement.

The decision is understood to be a source of frustration for Hull, given Castleford's exemption for Gale, who could still feature this season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in training last month.

It’s a disgrace!

Yeah, yeah, I know, he has played one game, 80 minutes in SL, but there shouldn’t be this ruling for any club. That’s the whole point of having a squad!

So Wire & Cas can get away with not using this “salary cap dispensation” until they feel it is needed!

Probably saving it towards the end of the season when all other clubs could be struggling with injuries & no players & they get to boost their squad with new, maybe NRL players!

Get rid of the cap!

The cap should go without doubt its holding the sport back in my opinion.

It’s true that Cas and Wire asked before the seasons start and if its in the rules then fine certainly till the seasons starts up,which Hull have found to their cost the dispensation won’t apply to them.

There should be a time limit for other clubs to use their dispensation as Josie rightly says you can’t keep it in your back pocket all season long on the off chance,to say the least it’s pushing the rules and shouldn’t be allowed, but the easiest thing would be to do awayith the cap and have at it.

Typical stupidity by the RFL, to allow two clubs and deny one is ludicrous.I agree that no club should be allowed to recruit further. This is just another reason why RL is a dying game, it is being run by idiots.

The dispensation is a joke a anyway.

If a team has another player in that position available in the squad they should be denied.

Wire and Castleford both already have cover its not like 2017 for us where we didnt have a team to play without it.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

I can see bot sides of this, my only hope is that if Luke Gale plays this season then his entire salary for the year should count on the cap, after all its the same situation, just the opposite way round.

But this is the RFL we are talking about, putting the correct number of balls in a bag is beyond their capabilities
