LEEDS LINKED WITH CRONULLA FORWARD

Post by josie andrews »

Leeds Rhinos are chasing Cronulla Sharks’ Ava Seumanafagai according to reports Down Under.

The Daily Telegraph claim that the NRL outfit will offload the valued forward in a bid to reduce their salary cap before the opening round of the season.

Seumanafagai, who is also attracting interest from St George Illawarra, made 13 appearances for the Sharks last season after signing from Wests Tigers.

The 27-year-old started his career with Parramatta Eels before he was picked up by the Tigers, making 105 appearances over five years for the Western Sydney outfit.

Seumanafagai is off contract at the end of the season and it’s believed Cronulla have given the New Zealander permission to speak with other clubs.

Leeds head coach David Furner has recently stated that he is happy with his team’s current forward options, but the Rhinos do have space on their cap should they decide to strengthen.

Having recently allowed Jack Ormondroyd, Josh Walters and Anthony Mullally to leave, Furner could be tempted by Seumanafagai who will add size and athleticism to the Rhinos pack.

Another club that doesn’t seem affected by the salary cap 🤔

Also signed two lads from Widnes, Walters and O’Connor (Terry’s lad).

Perhaps Leeds and Warrington do not seem affected by the cap because they are careful in the way they adhere to it.

Perhaps their Accounts Dept is more switched on than what happens at the DW ?

As mentioned in the thread above, Jack Ormondroyd, Josh Walters and Anthony Mullally have just been released by Leeds, therefore 3 players are being replaced by 1 on the Salary Cap.

If they can number crunch ok, what's the thing with us, remembering each club are allowed 2 marquee players; so maybe Hurrell and Merrin at Leeds and Austin and Clark (Jason) at Warrington all on discounted SC rates ?

Let's not blame something happening at other clubs, that no one on here has any definite inside knowledge of, just because we've been caught out.

Agree though, a Live Cap should not be delayed so late on by the RFL, a very poor process and puts the game in a bad light.

Thought you only got a small percentage of relief for Marquee signings if they aren’t home grown like us with George Williams! All the players you mentioned above are Antipodeans.

Its nothing to do with being caught out i just look the teams and think either we over pay or they underpay but somehow get the players.

And i still believe the fact that the 14k ia Agents fees/costs makes the whole thing a joke.

Josie, '2017' Marquee ruling, quote taken from SL clubs meeting, which, of course has now been doubled to two signings since then, as below (and incidentally, Rob Elstone seeking to increase again for 2020, to help prevent further raids from the NRL) :-

"At present, clubs can nominate one player whose salary will total no more than £150,000 on the cap, with any wages over that amount exempt from the current total. Clubs have voted through proposals to double the amount of marquee players allowed, despite only a handful of clubs utilising the ruling since it came into being two years ago."

And 'Caboosegg', I think the amount they were over the Cap was something like only 0.8% and agree that is one of the elements they are appealing on and hope to succeed with.
I think it was St Helens in the past, that were higher over the limit than that, they got fined but didn't get any points deducted, so that should set a precedent ?
