Wigan Athletic football club goes into administration

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Athletic has gone into administration after the coronavirus pandemic had a "significant impact" on the football club's finances.

Paul Stanley, Gerald Krasner and Dean Watson from Begbies Traynor have been appointed as joint administrators for the Championship team, a statement said.

Mr Krasner said: "Our immediate objectives are to ensure the club completes all its fixtures this season and to urgently find interested parties to save Wigan Athletic FC and the jobs of the people who work for the club.

"Obviously the suspension of the Championship season due to COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the recent fortunes of the club.

"Wigan Athletic has been a focal point and source of pride for the town since 1932 and anyone who is interested in buying this historic sporting institution should contact the joint administrators directly."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

When you sell to a casino group then I’m sorry problems were always bound to come, they want instant success it seems to me and when it didn’t come, well here we are.

How does this effect the rugby?

Can see Whelan buying this back for a lot less than he paid.

It’s a calculated gamble, Latics go bust, They’ve no assets, ground owned by another company. They take the 12 point deduction, puts them 4 points from safety with 3 to play, but are in form, 3 from 3 since lockdown. They emerge as a Phoenix company under a different name and carry on as normal. It’s the poor suppliers who are owed money that suffer

Rugby paying rent to Wigan Athletic has kept them going for so long too. I can't see us buying the stadium though. I think the council will probably buy it

There will be minimum impact, look at the following Quotes from Phil Wilkinson below:

Just had 20 minutes with the administrator at the DW Stadium. Transcribing now, and video interview soon.
Some key points:
- Intention is to finish season
- Confident of finding a buyer
- Club 'well run day to day'... money just hasn't arrived from owner

- Plan is to find a buyer, rather than break up and sell-off training ground, players etc
- Spoken to manager, who was shocked.. but positive attitude. He'll be informing players
- Won't impact on Warriors' use of DW.

Nothing will change, the stadium and the latics will still be there

It’ll be interesting to see how easy it is to find someone who will pulp money into the club,in the current climate I’m not so sure it’ll be that easy to be honest
