Make yourselves heroes', Lam tells Warrio

Post by josie andrews »

Adrian Lam has called on his players to ‘create our own legacy’ and re-establish Wigan as the Challenge Cup kings.

Despite being the most successful side in the competition’s history, Wigan haven’t lifted the famous pot since 2013 – when they beat Hull FC in the final.

Hull got their revenge in 2017 – Wigan’s last appearance in the final – and this afternoon stand between them and a semi-final berth in the revamped 2020 version.

And Lam – who lifted the cup in 2002 at Murrayfield – says it’s time to write another page in the club’s glittering success story.

It’s been a difficult year for any sport, and so we’re grateful the RFL has carried on with the Challenge Cup, it could easily have been left out this year,” said the Warriors head coach.

“There’s a romantic story with Wigan and the Challenge Cup but, from my side, there are only two or three players who have won the cup, so we want to create our own legacy.

“This competition, Wigan have won 19 of them since, what, 1897, and this club has more than anyone else.

“So to us as a club, the fans, the ex-players, the history of the competition means a lot to us.

“But it’s been seven years since Wigan won it, and if you’d said that in 2013, you wouldn’t have believed it.

“Some players won’t be here next year playing, so we’ve got an opportunity to be on the walls of these great Wigan sides.”

Today’s game at Salford’s AJ Bell Stadium kicks-off at 5pm and is live on BBC TV.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
