Use of Edge Hall Road as a Community Facility
1. Your chance to make a difference to Orrell and the surrounding areas
In conjunction with Orrell RUFC, Brighter Better Orrell would like to assess the level of public support there would be for returning the ground back to the community -for use by the whole community.

A few months ago, the Wigan Warriors moved their training base to Robin Park and since then there has been much speculation about the future of the Edge Hall Road site. Several different scenarios have been mentioned including Orrell Rugby Union Club moving to the site; a local community facility or the being sold for housing development - which would be the worst scenario for the people of Orrell.

Over the last six months Orrell RUFC have discussed various options with Wigan Warriors and have first refusal on a proposal. It has been suggested that Edge Hall Road could become a true community hub; pitches used by Orrell RUFC and other local sporting teams; various community groups & organisations using the clubhouse for meetings, events, etc.

Your answers will help us to assess whether there is enough support for us to put the case for a community centre forward to the current owners. It will also help us gauge whether there is enough support from the people of Orrell & surrounding areas for such a facility and for what uses; bearing in mind that a new community sports/health hub is being developed by Orrell & Winstanley Community Sports Club - which will also be the new home for both Orrell RUFC and Winstanley Park Cricket Club and will provide the community with access to rugby, cricket and other sports & well-being activities.

My understanding was that Orrell RUFC and Winstanley Cricket Club were planning to develop land on Winstanley Road alongside the college as a joint concern and this area has already been partially fenced off. Winstanley CC are being forced to leave their ground in Winstanley Park by the landlord. It would be a shame if Orrell RUFC were planning to abandon this plan and leave the cricket club high and dry as I'm sure they wouldn't be able to fund the move to the Winstanley Road site themselves and there is no mention of the cricket club in the proposal to move back to Edge Hall Road.

Cant see Orrell going back to Edge Hall road as they are well advanced into their new venture with Winstanley CC .A community centre/ health/centre gym would be the most probable outcome as I think planning has been refused for housing because of the access.

A bowling green would be good at the Winstanley site. as the one at the Holts Arms, Billinge is to become defunct from March this year.

It would be interesting to know who instigated this survey .It does seem to have an Orrell RU bias but also mentions Orrell’s other project being well advanced. What it doesn’t mention is Orrell St James Amateur RL Club..Ever since Wigan vacated the ground I have seen it as a perfect fit,two Orrell clubs one playing in winter the other in summer.

A flyer in theLocal Life magazine suggests it is a local councillor behind it.

OSJ have just taken over their newly configured grounds and Clubhouse, just developed for them by the council and contractors responsible for the M58 ground works, which left them homeless for a season or two.
I think a football team also share these facilities, already making it a Community project.

Traffic is a nightmare as it is without more houses.

Some kind of community centre is probably favourite.

Whilst I agree about the traffic id always assumed housing would be on the cards rather than its continued use as a sports groundnut the end of this id be willing a small wager that housing will be the way forward.

I would have agreed with you completely but I think the penny has finally dropped that Orrell simply wasn't built for this many cars.
