Saints to appeal Tommy Makinson grading

SAINTS are appealing the grading of Tommy Makinson's high tackle on Castleford's Niall Evalds for which he was handed a three-match penalty notice.

Makinson was sent off for a high tackle on Castleford’s full back Niall Evalds 16 minutes from the end of Thursday’s Super League game.

The panel have deemed the tackle a “Reckless” Grade C offence after making contact with the head or neck of an opponent.

The panel indicated he “tried to tackle, but reckless about outcome”.

Coach Kristian Woolf confirmed that the club are appealing.

He said: "We are going to appeal the grading.

"We just want him on the field and that is one reason why you challenge things.

"But the other reason we challenge, is because we honestly believe there is something there to challenge.

"We will sort that out tonight and hopefully get him back sooner rather than later."

As the ban currently stands, Makinson would miss the Wigan game, the home clash with Leigh and the top 2 v 3 tussle at neighbours Warrington.

Shoulder charge and contact with the Head... what is there to appeal.

Ban reduced to two games..clearly he's "not that type of player"im amazed they've not made Thaler say sorry for sending him off.

St Helens winger Tommy Makinson has three-match ban reduced to two on appeal

The England international, who was sent off for a high tackle on Castleford full-back Niall Evalds in last Thursday’s defeat by the Tigers, pleaded guilty to the offence but the Super League champions challenged the grading by the Rugby Football League’s match review panel.

An operation rules tribunal downgraded the offence from C to B and imposed a more lenient punishment, although a £500 fine remains.

It means Makinson will miss Friday’s derby against Wigan and Saints’ next home game against Leigh Centurions on Thursday week but will be free for the derby against Warrington on Bank Holiday Monday.
