The average age of every Super League squad as 2022 season approaches

Post by josie andrews »

We've had a look at how every Super League squad stacks up

Wigan Warriors are approaching the new Super League season with the youngest squad on average.

The Cherry and Whites are able to boast a host of talented youngsters and as a result they are the only top flight outfit to have an average squad age of under 25.

Matt Peet does have the Super League’s oldest player in 36-year-old Thomas Leuluai at his disposal, but a large proportion of their first-team squad is made up of players aged 23 or under with the likes of Cade Cust, Morgan Smithies, Oliver Partington and Harry Smith set to play big roles next year.

Leeds Rhinos and St Helens also boast young squads with homegrown talent making up sizeable chunks of their top 17 and fringe groups.

Hull KR have moved to freshen up their squad in recent years by bringing in promising young talent from elsewhere, while also promoting a host of players from the academy set-up. The Robins head into the season with an average age of 25.2

KR’s cross-city rivals Hull FC have average age of 26.1 and after adding the experience of Luke Gale to their line-up, they’ll be hoping to better last season’s eighth place finish.

Super League newcomers Toulouse have the oldest squad at present with the likes of Harrison Hansen, Dom Peyroux, Joseph Paulo, Mitch Garbutt, Jonathan Ford and Mark Kheirallah all over the age of 30.

Sylvain Houles is still looking to add to his squad before the season gets underway with may alter his side’s average age of 27.8.

Average Super League squad ages ahead of the 2022 season:

Wigan – 24.4

Leeds – 25.0

St Helens – 25.1

Hull KR – 25.2

Wakefield – 25.4

Warrington – 25.5

Huddersfield – 25.7

Hull FC – 26.1

Catalans – 26.5

Castleford – 27.0

Salford – 27.5

Toulouse – 27.8

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

From that table, I'd conclude that average age doesn't mean very much. Last season's top 2 teams are at opposite ends of the table . . .
Wigan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Saints ⭐⭐⭐
