The reserves..good idea?
I'm just wondering that with the covid situation maybe the clubs should have held off another year before bring the comp back, just wanted to know what people's thoughts are on the subject.

Very pleased to see it back. I think that lots of younger players (not just at Wigan) had their development stalled by the lack of games last season.
Re: The reserves..good idea?
I read today some teams are already making noises about pulling it. They’ll be the usual suspects no doubt.
Things aren’t ideal at the minute but the reserves starts at the end of Feb, so there’s time for things to pick up yet. I could understand them delaying it a few weeks but to pull it would be totally wrong IMO and would be playing right in to the hands of the teams I’m sure will be delighted to see it pulled.

And it was those murmurs that made me post this I can kind of see both sides to the argument but even without Covid it’s only worth doing if it’s going to be done well,I suspect it won’t be and it’ll end up being binned sooner rather than later.NICKYKISS wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 10:08 pm I read today some teams are already making noises about pulling it. It would be an absolute last resort to bin it off IMO. It starts at the end of Feb and runs until the 3rd September. There are gaps of two weeks between some fixtures and as much as four weeks between others. That’s a sign straight away that it’s not being done properly but at least it leaves loads of leeway to push it back and then move fixtures around.fozzieskem wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 10:18 pmAnd it was those murmurs that made me post this I can kind of see both sides to the argument but even without Covid it’s only worth doing if it’s going to be done well,I suspect it won’t be and it’ll end up being binned sooner rather than later.NICKYKISS wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 10:08 pm I read today some teams are already making noises about pulling it. I don’t see any side of an argument to pull it tbh, certainly not at the moment anyway. Yes Covid is running absolutely rampant at the moment but you’d imagine the more rampant it is now means the more settled it should be in 3-4 months time and then the only reason you’re left with for not running it is that the likes of Salford and Cas can’t be bothered with the hassle/cost.
As you say we probably wouldn’t do it properly even without Covid but we’ve got to start somewhere.
Re: The reserves..good idea?
COVID's here to stay IMO, if we can't do this now with a mild variant going around everyone, then we won't ever be able to. We have to find a way to normalise this now, even if that means games cancelled every now and again, that used to happen very occasionally with other illnesses too, it will just be a bit more common.

Re: The reserves..good idea?
I’ve always been a supporter of the rs]ever e grade it gets players game time and allows them, hopefully if used right a way back from injury instead of being thrown back in so speaking for myself I would love to see it back and thriving but still questions remain are there enough player s to run the comp? I’m not sure there is but we shall see of course,Covid I agree is here to stay and as Nicky points out there are gaps in games that will help out but if Covid strikes a club I just feel the comp will suffer.
Don’t get me wrong it should be back but I feel it’ll end in tears.

i think that is why they have alternated weeks with the senior academy matches, to ensure that resources arent spread too thinly whilst it gets back off the groundfozzieskem wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 7:49 am I’ve always been a supporter of the rs]ever e grade it gets players game time and allows them, hopefully if used right a way back from injury instead of being thrown back in so speaking for myself I would love to see it back and thriving but still questions remain are there enough player s to run the comp? i like yourself believe that all teams should have a reserve grade, and academy teams to give players a pathway into the senior side, provide regular competition for fringe / squad players and a route back from injury (as in the old A-team)
there are some very short sighted clubs / owners around at the minute, looking at such a small view of the game

I think that is spot-on Pieman. Junior members of the club can ill afford to miss another 12 months of playing rugby. If the authorities are not careful it will stifle their development, a bit like what is happening in the school classroom.the pieman wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 9:09 ami think that is why they have alternated weeks with the senior academy matches, to ensure that resources arent spread too thinly whilst it gets back off the groundfozzieskem wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 7:49 am I’ve always been a supporter of the rs]ever e grade it gets players game time and allows them, hopefully if used right a way back from injury instead of being thrown back in so speaking for myself I would love to see it back and thriving but still questions remain are there enough player s to run the comp?
