Women’s season opener live on The Sportsman

Post by josie andrews »

The Sportsman will kick off their coverage of the 2022 Betfred Women’s Super League this Sunday by bringing you St Helens vs Wigan Warriors, live and exclusive on their dedicated Rugby League Youtube Channel, alongside a brand new monthly Women’s Rugby League show.

St Helens won an unprecedented treble in 2021, and retained the first of their three titles on Saturday, lifting the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup in front of a record crowd at Elland Road. This weekend, they face arch-rivals Wigan, at their Totally Wicked Stadium home; kick off 2pm.

St Helens Captain Jodie Cunningham is hoping for another strong start to their league campaign on Sunday: “We’ve defended one of our trophies now, and we can fully focus on the Women’s Super League. Hopefully we can back it up again, no-one might want us to win the treble, but we’re going to do everything we can.”

Wigan Warriors last lifted the Betfred Women’s Super League trophy in 2018, and Winger Georgia Wilson knows there would be no better way to being a tilt for the title in 2022 than by beating the Champions on their own patch: “There’s going to be a lot of feisty-ness, the players that have been at Wigan for a long time understand what this big derby is all about. There’s a few new girls in, so we’ve got to drill that into them this week in training; what it means to be playing for Wigan in this derby. We’re going to get on that patch and play for the badge.”

The Sportsman will be live streaming games throughout the Betfred Women’s Super League season, and will also bringing you all of the big news and insight from across the league in our brand new, monthly, Women’s Rugby League Show.

Episode one, hosted by Christy McAllister and available to watch from 6pm on Thursday, features St Helens, Wigan Warriors, York City Knights and Leeds Rhinos as they preview the start of the season, and build up to this weekend’s action.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
