Excellent article by Lucky 13. Yes players do need a realistic wage as it’s only a short career.
However players who might want to take the higher wage packet elsewhere might start to see the value from becoming part of a team/culture that grows together.
Maybe ,just maybe ,this can happen at Wigan.
I will also add , not saying others don’t, that I want a strong Wire, Leeds, St Helens etc as the game benefits.

Re: george williams
I have always thought that with Williams you get a good grabber, a good break/pass a game and a strong defence. He went well in the NRL because he was in a team in which that level of contribution was what they wanted and needed. I haven’t seen enough of Wire to say with certainty, but if they are looking for someone to organise the team and run the show then he will not be that player. It’s a bit like when we signed Dennis Moran and asked him to guide us round the park. He went from a high scoring supporting/broken field threat to a waste of space in no time.
Re: george williams
Because they are not supposed to be of the same calibre and quality but on another level. This is pro sport not British Telecom where in years gone by you got a pay rise because you were a year older.josie andrews wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 1:43 pmI don’t like this “marquee” player. I don’t think any player, and I don’t care who it is, the wages should be on a scale with bonuses. Why should one player get two or three thirds more than another player of the same calibre & quality?
Top players can command top wages and if Wigan or any other team won't pay them, then those players will play elsewhere where they will get the financial reward.
Re: george williams
There might be one or two every now and again who stick around and we have had players like that in Lockers and Faz but these two are the exception in they are are top players. It's much easier for average players to stick around for the "culture".
In just about any walk of life and RL is no different, if you want a big pay rise you get it by moving on or at least threatening to and being willing to follow through with the threat if your bluff is called, not by remining loyal. In RL where you have players agents added to the equation its even more likely top players will move and in any case who says Wigan have a monopoly on a good culture?
