Rugby league agent wants the salary cap to be raised for the sake of the sport

Post by josie andrews »

The salary cap is often one of the greatest debates in Super League circles.

It was first introduced in order to make it a level-playing field within the top flight of UK rugby league.

That being said, despite the ability to spend the same amount of money has not exactly done that, with only four teams ever winning the Super League Grand Final – Leeds Rhinos, St Helens, Wigan Warriors and Bradford Bulls.

And, with the NRL’s cap around the £5 million mark as opposed to Super League’s £2.1 million there is a major fear that the UK competition is being left behind rapidly.

For leading rugby league agent, Craig Harrison of Show Me The Money UK, he wants to see the salary cap scrapped.

I heard Paul Lakin (Hull KR Chief Executive) saying at least eight clubs could take more than the cap, so if you’ve got the money why can’t you invest in your own company?” Harrison said on The Full Eighty Minutes podcast.

“It’s down to losing players who don’t want to play our game, they are on £30 grand and they are risking everything.

“I talked to four players about Glastonbury and asked if they have been and they said no because it’s during rugby time.

They are spending 15 years of their life not doing anything like that and some are on less than 40 grand.

Would yous sacrifice your holidays, festivals and weekends for less than 40 grand and be absolutely busted most weekends and sat on painkillers.”

Harrison believes that players will be able to earn more without a cap and that will ensure that players stay in the game for longer.

“I think to raise the average wage we need to put the cap up because players will pack it in and say are you mad?

“And some will retire early because they will think they aren’t putting their bodies through it.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

The fact only four super league teams have actually won the grand final, doesn't paint the whole picture of SL at all (especially considering one of which is virtually an ale house club).

"Would yous sacrifice your holidays, festivals and weekends for less than 40 grand and be absolutely busted most weekends and sat on painkillers.”

I personally wouldn't have thought playing in the NRL isn't entirely down to just money, the opportunity to play and live in a different county and a experience a superior competition surely has influence.

Aside from the crocodile tears, it's a fair point he makes about rewards matching effort and commitment.

I'd say that, at the moment, for an aspiring up and comer plus, journeyman types of player, the salary cap is a killer.

What's that got to do with whether or not the salary cap should be raised?
