Williams, Sutton, Burgess etc. You cannot expect players of that level to leave and yet be the dominant force in the game. If Saints had lost homegrown/academy players of that standard then there is no way they would have won four SL titles in a row.nathan_rugby wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 7:44 amWho are you referring to specifically?Charriots Offiah wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 9:39 pmOk. My point still remains, we have let too many homegrown(academy) players leave to be a dominant force. That process continued last season.archiekeith wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 8:41 pm Either you or me doesn't understand English. No further comment by me
Nicholson and Halsall spring to my mind but apart from that cannot remember being disappointed with any other departures.
It was only a few years ago under Lam people were complaining we brought too many through at the same time and created an imbalance.

It did mate. It is irrelevant where our juniors are signed from, the important thing is that we retain the best. We could have been the best team in SL over the last decade if we had retained our academy products.PJC wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 8:47 am I ‘ve just read the “home grown players “ comment. I suspect it covers those nurtured through the academy wherever born.
It would be nice to see a Wigan team made up of lads who were born in the town/borough representing the town.
That’s not to say that I don’t appreciate, admire those that have come from elsewhere.

So are you saying that our coaches don't know what they are doing by letting these players go?Charriots Offiah wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 11:17 amIt did mate. OR
are you just peed off because they got rid of some of your favourite academy players?
maybe you could add a list of these superstars that where released by the club.

What do u expect when you’ve got high figures at the club coming out and saying we’re proud to let lads go and succeed in the nrl. TragicCharriots Offiah wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 11:17 amIt did mate. No, I am not saying the coaches let them go. The Club could not/did not retain them. I’ve started the list above and I am sure that any supporter or knowledgeable rugby league person can add to it with ease.medlocke wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 11:23 amSo are you saying that our coaches don't know what they are doing by letting these players go?Charriots Offiah wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 11:17 amIt did mate. I thought the same Josie. Typical click-bait non-story these news outlets specialise in. It boils down to he will give up control one day when he's older and either his sons or Danson will take over.josie andrews wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 12:37 pm What I read into the the headline by the Yorkshire press is that he is considering now to relinquish ownership admission when it is nothing of the sort, he is looking towards the future!
Admission to what? He is looking to the future & nothing more!

I have always thought Rads was out of his depth and I have seen nothing to convince mem otherwise but now IL has made him CEO. I didn't think this would make much difference when the news came out but if it means a less involvement form IL its not a good move.Wigan_forever1985 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:54 amI agree but have a slightly different take in that i think the recruitment (lack of plan etc) lays at Radlinskis door not ILsMike wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:43 am His best signings have been opportunistic not really planned. Some good success here and there, but we've not gone on to a 3-4 year period of dominance for a long while now. I think that's down to a somewhat fragmented recruitment strategy that often doesn't look like there's a coherent plan.
Overall he's been a good stable chairman mainly making sensible moves, perhaps a little sentimental in some recruitment and retention decisions. I feel we've done OK during his tenure. A little more luck with injuries and the odd brain explosion and we'd have done much better. That's not ILs fault. So I'd give 7.5/10!
I guess we don't know who has most to do with recruitment/retention about but Rads is the one who seems to make most of the announcements and comments on signings departures.
I was gobsmacked a while back when Partington, Shorrocks, Bryne and Smithies came through and Rads said at one of the forums they all got upgraded to first contracts as if there was no thought given as to the relative ability of the respective players. It did a grand job of filling up the salary cap.
I'd agree with MIke's 7.5/10 for IL's tenure with the recruitment and re-signing policy the black mark. The latter has not worked and the fiasco over Bateman does not seem to be repeated at other top clubs where according to the press release the club said the matter was closed in July and then wasn't and it even deferred to Bateman's timetable. That was truly amateurish. So knock another 0.5 off for that alone and make it 7/10.

Well done Dave for getting us. back on topic we seem to have gone full circle re- Ownership to Recruitment Perhaps recruitment requires its own topic space see Daves latest post always a good readDaveO wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 3:57 pmI thought the same Josie. Rads has always come across as a genuinely lovely bloke, and I hate to criticise him. But it does appear that the family atmosphere/being nice sometimes overrides other considerations like success on the pitch. I don't want to dig up the whole Joel Tomkins business again, but Rads' handling of it was a bit like Sunak with Zahawi and Raab - look after your mates rather than put the interests of the club first.
As to signings, they're never all going to work, and, under the cap, we have to look for some bargain basement deals. But taking up 3 quota spots with Burgess, Mago, Ellis, Miski? Clubs like Wakey, Huddersfield, Salford and Hull KR have done better. As you rightly say, it's not clear who is responsible for these.
