Warrington v Wigan for Locker Cup

Post by josie andrews »

Friday’s game at the Halliwell Jones will see both sides play for the Locker Cup.

Wigan are the current holders of the Locker Cup after win at the DW Stadium in 2022.

Warrington Wolves v Wigan Warriors, Friday 14th April, 8pm K.O. Get your tickets HERE.

As well as the two Betfred Super League points, the Locker Cup is also on the line on Friday
night as we face Warrington Wolves in Round 9.

The Cup was a key part of the rivalry up until the Super League era and has been reinstated in recent years.

The traditional pre-season friendly between Warrington and Wigan saw the Locker Cup competed for. The first contest was in 1938 and was then known as the Wardonia Cup which was donated by a local firm for charity matches.

Warrington won the inaugural Wardonia Cup on 20 August 1938 with the match, played at Central Park Wigan, in front of a crowd of 8,000. ended as a 17-17 draw. However, Warrington skipper Jack Arkwright won the cup on the toss of a coin.

For the 1972 season the trophy was renamed The Locker Cup. The Locker Cup was last played for before the summer era on 6 August 1995, when Wigan defeated Warrington 38-30 at Wilderspool. The launch of Super League in 1996 saw the end of the Locker Cup pre-season friendlies.

The trophy was revived for the 2019 Magic Weekend match at Anfield, Liverpool with the support of the Locker Group. Both teams played in kits commemorating the 1989 match played in Milwaukee as Warrington Wolves won 26-14.

Between 1972 and 1995, Wigan and Warrington each won it 12 times. Overall, the trophy has been played for on 55 occasions – Wigan winning 33 times, Warrington winning 21 and one draw.

Wigan are the current holders of the Locker Cup following last season’s win at the DW Stadium and the historic cup will add another element to Friday’s fixture with both teams looking to lift the trophy again.

Both Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors would like to extend its’ thanks to the Locker Group for their continued support. Tickets for Friday’s game are still on sale. Click HERE for all the details.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

With Vaughan Williams making the news this week I wonder who will have composed the pre and post match music?

Peets message tonight must be “be patient”. Wire have 1 young forward on the bench 2 backs and a hooker. Kasiano and Vaughn won’t run all night.

Stay in the game for the first 30. They should be gassed in the second half so be patient, spot the tired and use the pace we have!!
