We had the same criticism levelled at John Bateman not playing to his previous high standard but still better than most it now appears that Liam Farrell is now in the same boat.

There's a hell of a lot more wrong with this team than pointing the finger at Liam Farrell.

Liam Farrell is worthy of his place. However he is playing behind a beaten pack. Imagine him taking an angled pass of those big Saints forwards or indeed one from Roby.
As has been stated before we need some bigger, direct forwards.

The level that Farrell had been playing at over the last few years is so high that each year he continued the more likely it seemed that he would have a dip. Even James Roby has had a couple of years that weren't at the peak of his ability and he's probably the most consistent player Super League has ever had.

Farrell isn't really an issue. He's still performing better than most back row forwards in the competition, he's just not at the incredibly high level that he's set previously. These things tend to happen to players it's just remarkable that it's been so rare for Farrell.

If he can raise his performances towards the end of the year then there's no issue at all. I do think we have to be realistic and say that Farrell making 20 carries and 150m in games like he usually does may be counter productive now he's in his 30's. We've had a few season where he's ended up picking up injuries later in the year and it's been a big blow for the team. If what we're actually seeing is an attempt by Faz and the coaching team to manage his output in games and not burn himself out by going 110% at the beginning of the year then it's potentially a good thing.

I think we'll just have to see as the season goes on, but Farrell is not particularly high on our list of issues at present.

Farrell isn’t quite the player he was a few years back but still our best forward by a mile.

The point I was making was that if you want Farrell to shine and win games for Wigan , which he can and does, you need a pack that he can use. He would run the angles with Saint’s forwards.

Interesting though is the fact that in the one game in the league where he reverted to running forward instead of backing into the tackle he scored 3 out of the 4 tries he has scored this season.
Perhaps he should try this more often?

At HKR! I said the same, it was his best game this season.
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
