Time for a different captain
Re: Time for a different c...
I agree with most of these comments about O'Loughlin. He is a good player who is going to be a great player. At this time he is not captain material and is going to be prevented from being a great player as long as he has that burden.
It is easy for us all to be negative (including me) cos I really don't know who is the right person. I would be happier with Danny Or right now. He has been slagged a lot, but I think the captaincy could raise his game and give him the right to try to inspire the rest of the team.

Something needs to change that's for sure, but constantly chopping and changing key players isn't working. Kevin Brown has seen Orr and Vaileaki on the bench in 2 games now. For some baffling reason Millward seems to think he has some super-huma npotential, but he's just not big enough and his handling eerors and greedy centre play yesterday was awful...
I think the biggest problems we have now are lack of on-field organisation but more so a sense of any team confidence.
When Castleford went over for their first try of the second half yesterday you could see the Wigan squad under the sticks deflate and their heads go. Their body language was defeated and you could literally see them thinking 'here we go again'. The only Wigan player with any sort of vocal passion and fire was Wayne Godwin. We need
I'm glad I'm not coach!!

Kev Brown was amongst the awful yesterday. I think first pass he put down, dropped a few more during the game and had no positional sense (not surprising really)west-stand rich posted:

Agree that O'loughlin is not ready for coach. Iwanted him to be coach at the beginning of the year over Fletcher? just because he was a local lad and had been at the club longer and may have had more respect from other players but I don't think he even wants the responsibility or has it in him to coach a team this poor. We need someone who has authority, a loud mouth and knows what he's doing. In our team?? Sorry I've no solutions there.

Do I think Sean O'Loughlin is a good captain. Yes! He always has been at every level he has played at.
The team was no better when he did not play v Salford
HOWEVER, more important STOP PRETENDING A CAPTAIN IS GOING TO TURN THIS AROUND.
There are only 2 possible answers to what is happening;
1) The players are in conflict with each other
2) The players are in conflict with Millward
Those are the only answers to why the team are now not putting the effort in. Captains / selections / tactics are all unimportant red herring. THIS CLUB IS IN CRISIS

You are on your own here mate! I watched that game from behind the sticks yesterday, and O'loughlin showed no leadership at all! I did not see him say one word to his team. All he did was stand there with his head low, looking sorry for himself!jinkin jimmy posted:

A group of Wigan fans were shouting " talk to your team O'loughlin, you are the captain for god's sake!"
More vocal was Danny Orr and Moran who seemed the one's giving the team a talking too!
Don't get me wrong, i like O'loughlin, but this task is beyond him at this stage, and i feel it could destroy him as a player!
In my opinion Wigan need an old head to steady the ship at this stage. My choice would be Fletcher.
Re: Time for a different c...
:doz: Isn't this task beyond anybody in it's present state though? We need to know what is happening because whatever it is the players have stopped playing and stopped trying.
Fans are in shock and hurting. Wiganers can accept kids trying and getting flogged but to not try is a disgrace. I still find the Cas RT final no show hard to forgive. Why have the players thrown the towel in?
Do you think talking under the sticks is going to do anything, knowing that players are not putting it in.
Supporters clashed with players and supporters ended up hitting each other after the Cas game.

Re: Time for a different c...
Martin, when we were polled re who should be captain, my choice was Fletcher for this season, with an accompanying announcement that Lockers would by vice captain this season and would step up the next.
Having said that, I wasn't too unhappy when he was chosen. As CP says, he has been a leader all his life. He isn't doing much in the leadership stakes, I know, but our problems are deeper than this. Man for man, in most cases our squad should be able to compete (I don't say beat) with Cas without either captain or coach.
We are simply not playing for each other. I have a good example. Orr was struggling in defence on a couple of occasions with their new Fijian no 20, who was much too big for Orr, despite his valiant efforts. Why wasn't he helped out by his teammates? I am no Orr Fan as you all know, but he seemed to be deliberately left to his own devices on a few occasions yesterday and even I felt for him.

Understand your point Alan, but would it not be better to have an old head who can maybe handle that bit more pressure and who has seen things like this before? I do like O'loughlin don't get me wrong but, just feel this situation is beyond him and could ruin him.cpwigan posted:

I know we are lost for ideas at the moment as to how we could improve things, but i just feel that an old strong head guiding the ship who will not be too easily intimidated might be a strting point at least.
Re: Time for a different c...
Think you must have been standing near me under the sticks near those shouting at him. They were shouting at anyone in the team to speak up, nobody was saying anything to each other. They were looking up at the crowd but that was about it.Martin Taylor posted:You are on your own here mate! I'm not sure what's going on but I don't like hearing booing after every match, I'm not arguing against the booing it's just heartbreaking to look at your team and actually believe that either them or someone behind the scenes deserves those boos.

I don't think anyone is. Having a more vocal captain is just one small change that may improve the team, not turn the entire season around.cpwigan posted:

Some people are of the opinion LOckers is deficient as a captain and if they are right, why not change it?
As some people say some thing has to change and given Millward has little scope for manoeuvre this is one thing he could try.
To leave things as they are isn't going to work is it?
