Peet Previews Salford

Matt Peet looks ahead to Friday’s Betfred Super League Round 24 game against Salford Red Devils.

Peet: “It was a positive step, but already it’s in the memory bank and we’re concentrating on a good performance against Salford this weekend.”

Wigan Warriors v Salford Red Devils, DW Stadium, Friday 1 September, 8pm K.O.

Matt Peet spoke to the press on Wednesday afternoon as the Warriors prepare to face Salford Red Devils in a Retro Round clash at the DW Stadium.

Reflecting on the victory over Catalans Dragons last time out, Peet said: “I was asked after the match if it was the best performances of the season, and I said yes because it was. It was a positive step, but already it’s in the memory bank and we’re concentrating on a good performance against Salford this weekend.”

The Warriors were backed by a vocal travelling support in the South of France, and on the Wigan fans, Peet said: “It wasn’t just during the game, it was the whole build up. When you know so many fans have gone over it brought a level of expectation and a healthy pressure of being at this club. It was brilliant for the players, and I’m just glad they rewarded the fans and contributed to a good weekend.”

Looking ahead to Friday night’s Retro Round opponents Salford Red Devils, Peet said: “Salford is always one of our toughest games. Certainly as far as running intensity and the way they move the ball, you’ve got to be prepared to work hard and you can’t have a minute off. We know they will be coming to compete and challenge us as they’re a play-off quality team.”

Speaking on Brad O’Neill, Peet said: “Saturday was the sort of performance that we are aiming for, and he was right at the heart of it. In the intense games some players have to strive to reach that intensity, but he just loves it. He’s just a young player at the minute who is striving on and off the field, and for me he’s been one of the standout young players in the game this season. We’re really proud of the way he’s developing.”

The Warriors have won their last five Super League matches, and on building momentum, Peet said: “You’re always looking to string positive performances together at this point in the year where there isn’t much time to get it right. If we can look at that Catalans performance as a kickstart then great, but there is no guarantee that will be the case.

“We don’t get carried away as there’s still plenty of rugby to be played and Salford will be a completely different threat in their own manner. We’ve got ourselves into a position now where if we continue to perform then we will finish in good shape.”
