Club confirms King to leave

Toby King is to leave Wigan at the end of the 2023 season.

The 27-year-old has played 27 games for the Warriors in 2023, scoring 11 tries.

Chief Executive Kris Radlinski said: “We tried really hard to extend Toby’s stay at Wigan.”

Wigan Warriors confirm that Toby King will leave the club at the conclusion of the 2023 Betfred Super League Season bringing an end to his one-year loan spell.

The centre joined Wigan after a loan spell at Huddersfield in 2022 and has played in all but one game in 2023, a total of 27 games scoring 11 tries – including a memorable try sealing a win against St Helens in front of 24,275 fans at the DW Stadium on Good Friday.

Chief Executive Kris Radlinski said: “We tried really hard to extend Toby’s stay at Wigan. We had a deal agreed with Warrington in principle but then the salary cap rules changed for 2024 and as such, Toby became a valuable asset to the Wolves being a homegrown talent. It is perfectly within their gift to recall Toby.

“I vividly remember Matt and myself meeting Toby at his manager’s house before the start of the season. Matt was incredibly honest with Toby about where he felt his game was at and how he was going to get the best out of him. Toby took everything on board and delivered on his promises. He has committed himself wholeheartedly to the Wigan club and he will always have friends here. If there is a blueprint of how a season-long loan should be fulfilled, the way that Toby and the club have executed it should be replicated.

“Toby will leave with heritage number #1127 and he will be remembered for having an outstanding season in 2023. Who knows, he may return someday. I would like to thank Warrington for their assistance in making it happen.”

Head Coach Matt Peet said: “Toby has been a pleasure to work with and the players and staff are going to miss him and his family.

“I’d like to wish him all the best for his future on and off the field.”

Toby King is sponsored by ABC Managed Services.

Sadly once happy harry left it was ever more likely King would go back sadly whatever Peet and the team have done to King they've mined his form like frontier men mining gold no team seem to get as much out of him as we have seen as fans this season.

A shame but he always was their player.

Not to be the negative one but it also must mean King is happy to go back. We know from experience contracts these days are not worth the paper they are written on and no club would want a player who doesn't want to be there.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

It will be interesting to see if he goes into somewhat of a decline?

He definitely doesn't want to go back.
Also his contract does mean something wire hold the strings. I Feel for him and can only see negatives for him returning. They obviously didn't rate him not only Powell but powers there with allowing him to go to their main competitors for honours. Shit club with shit player ethics. Cooper perfect example. How Williams was hoodwinked into joining them baffled me especially by mr charisma.

Not sure I agree.

He may just be the type of person who knows he signed a contract and doesn’t want to kick up a fuss to force a move.

He may also want to go back and prove the doubters wrong which is more likely because if Powell moving.

Why would he? Seems to be enjoying playing here and has a chance of a GF ring.
