England set to call-up Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves youngsters for final Test

Post by josie andrews »

Exclusive: The pair will be in camp ahead of the third test in Leeds.

England are set to welcome Morgan Smithies and Josh Thewlis into camp ahead of the third and final Test with Tonga. Rugby League Live understands the pair are set to link up with the England squad next week after receiving the call from Shaun Wane.

The duo will be available for selection ahead of the contest at AMT Headingley Stadium as England look to secure a series whitewash over Kristian Woolf's side. Their inclusions come after both Dom Young and Morgan Knowles withdrew last week due to illness and injury respectively. Wane did not replace the pair following their departures last week but the additions will now be in place for the rest of the series.

It marks another impressive landmark for Smithies this month. The loose forward secured his first Grand Final triumph with Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford and then landed a move to NRL side Canberra Raiders, though the deal has yet to be announced by the Australian club. The same can be said for Thewlis who was named Super League's Young Player of the Year after his performances for Warrington Wolves this season.

In the absence of both Young and Tommy Makinson, Tom Johnstone and Matty Ashton were given the nod in the second Test, with Ashton bagging a brace. Meanwhile, Liam Farrell replaced Morgan Knowles in Wane's side on Saturday, though he only came on for the closing minutes of the game.

22-year-old Smithies made his England debut in the mid-season international against France earlier this year while Thewlis, 21, has two outings for England Knights on his CV. Thewlis joins a large number of Warrington players in the squad and one of them, George Williams, will make his first appearance of the series this weekend after Shaun Wane confirmed he would play now he's served a two-match suspension picked up at the end of the Super League season.
