I can remember when Wigan had 2 shirts. If their normal cherry and white clashed at home they had to change. It was considered “fair play “ to have the away team in their normal shirt. Wigan’s shirt was blue. A bit different now .

I did not know that. I thought away kits were for the away team.

Pretty sure we played a challenge cup match at St Helens 83/84 season in a mud bath, we had our away strip first half and either a different away top second or maybe Saints away shirt! You couldn't tell who was who at half time.

Wintergreen. I think that you are suggesting that I maybe incorrect . It’s a long time ago and I was told that by my Dad who had watched Wigan from the 1930’s and the practice may have come from then. Wigan did occasionally play in a blue shirt in the ‘60s at home as is evidenced by old photographs. Admittedly they are in black and white. I can think of no other reason why blue was adopted…….Wigan played for a short spell at the end of the 1960’s in an all white strip. I have some old photographs in a scrap book.

When l was watching Wigan in the 50’s the main strip was “cherry and white hoops” and the alternative strip was “ blue and white hoops”. The home team changed the colour of their shirts if there was a colour clash so Wigan always played away games in their main strip and occasionally played in blue and white at home. You couldn’t buy a replica shirt, the only way to get one was by playing for Wigan

I’ll put my cards on the table. I much prefer the old cherry and white jersey and white shorts with no adverts. However I accept that it is needed today. Going off topic . While looking for the date in my scrap book of Wigan’s white shirts I noticed how low crowds were 60’s 70’s. A rough estimate across the league 5/6 thousand average.
