Sam Kasiano leaves Warrington Wolves as overseas recruitment opportunity emerges for Sam Burgess

Post by josie andrews »

The forward has agreed to depart the Super League club.

Sam Kasiano is set to leave Warrington Wolves, Rugby League Live can reveal. The powerhouse prop is understood to have reached an agreement which will see him leave the Super League club with immediate effect, freeing up a quota spot for new coach Sam Burgess to use during the campaign.

Kasiano, 33, spent the 2023 season at the Halliwell Jones Stadium following a big-money move from Catalans Dragons and was a regular throughout the year. However, his future has been a topic of discussion for several months and now, the former NRL forward has left the club.

Burgess has been keen to get to work on his squad, both from a recruitment and mental toughness perspective and he has wasted little time getting to grips with the group, which has struggled to fulfil expectations in the past. Plenty of changes have been made and Kasiano now joins the list of players to depart.

Since his arrival, Warrington have bolstered their pack with the arrivals of Zane Musgrove, Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Jordy Crowther and crucially, Kasiano's departure frees up a quota spot, and a considerable salary, for the Wire to make the most of as the season progresses. A prop replacement appears to be the most likely focus for the club, with Thomas Mikaele's loan spell also ending following the culmination of last season.

As for Kasiano, he is expected to leave Super League after five years in the competition, making 100 appearances. He had previously spent eight years in the NRL playing for Canterbury Bulldogs and Melbourne Storm. He joined Catalans in 2019 and spent four years in Perpignan.

Warrington aren't likely to waste any time in pursuing a new signing. Earlier in the off-season they made a play for Salford's Oli Partington, though the Reds' double sale of Andy Ackers and Brodie Croft ensured they didn't need to push forward with that deal.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Is that the reason they recruited Max Wood?

Released on medical grounds is what I've heard.

"Top" team aren't they. Nothing but a collective of money chasing, egocentric clowns with no pedigree or class whatsoever
