I understand that Mike, but I think the Americans are a lot different from the Canadians. Are there still leagues in either place?
The RFL/SL sort of killed it dead. There are still some leagues but way smaller ambition and no investment. It was a crazy way to drive investment out of the game IMO.
The RFL are killing our game as they go along IMO ☹️
In this case I blame the clubs. Th y decided it wasn't "beneficial to the league in the medium term" or something. Actually they just didn't want to organize another foreign trip after covid IMO. Short-term-ism of the highest order.

Disagree, america and Canada isn't like popping to Europe and long term would add to costs for fans as clubs will be forces to increase tickets to make up for revenue loss from lack of away fans
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

IMO it was an opportunity to access a huge new market with vast investment potential into a cash strapped sport. To say there was no medium term value was just a lie from the clubs who were only looking at the next few seasons. I doubt the opportunity will come around again. I wonder what IMG would have thought at the time. Let's hope the no-growth strategy pays off, but in business that's usually a route to going out of business eventually.

I agree, lets face it, some clubs only bring 100/200 supporters anyway so it's not like the club would be loosing out on tens of thousands if an overseas club only had 20/30 supporters, yes revenues would be down but it should be up to the clubs to market the expected low away support to get more casuals through the door, the Toronto and potential US markets should have been viewed with an opprotunity to reach a wider TV audience

Manchester City open doors to Penrith Panthers to help them secure WCC against Wigan Warriors

PREMIER LEAGUE reigning champions Manchester City have opened their doors to NRL reigning premiers, Penrith Panthers, to help the latter secure the World Club Challenge against Wigan Warriors.

The Panthers are taking the clash at the DW Stadium on Saturday February 24 incredibly seriously following their narrow Golden Point defeat to St Helens in Australia this time last year.

Penrith, who have won the last three NRL Grand Finals, will be guests of City when they take on Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on February 17, before the Mountain Men train on an indoor pitch 48 hours later. City’s gym, pool and massage rooms will all be available also, the Sydney Morning Herald has revealed.

The Panthers will also travel up to Warrington to have an opposed session against the Wolves, who are now led by former South Sydney Rabbitohs hero Sam Burgess.

The arrangements are likely to be finalised this weekend when Penrith’s football manager Jason Wrigley makes the trip to the UK.

“We’re incredibly appreciative of what Manchester City have offered us, the World Club Challenge is important to the club, but the chance for the playing group to go overseas and experience the City campus will be enormous,” Penrith chief executive Matt Cameron said.

“The club’s success [in] the last three years has helped with brand awareness, and you can only imagine what linking with a club like City will do for us.

“It’s a recognition in some ways that we’re good enough to represent the NRL and our game on the international stage.”

Penrith have yet to win the World Club Challenge, going down to Wigan in 1991 before being defeated by Bradford Bulls in 2004.

The Panthers were also defeated by Saints last year by a Lewis Dodd drop goal.

Another case in point that Wigan really don't listen to the fans .
Posted on the website about club tickets for Magic tickets going on sale last Sunday when they absolutely knew that wasn't the case for Wigan fans.
Whoever runs the media posts for Wigan really doesn't know what information source the fanbase use .
