Matt Peet gives his thoughts following Wigan’s 40-0 pre-season victory over Hull FC.

Matt Peet reflected on a game with ‘a lot of positives’ as the Warriors finished their pre-season campaign with a 40-0 victory on the road at Hull FC.

Reflecting at the final hooter, Peet said: “There was a lot of positive things as far as a pre-season game. The score looks comfortable now but you all saw, in the first half especially and even in the second half there were bouts where we were defending under pressure.

“[There were] A number of repeat sets, drop outs and six again calls so we were stretched in all sorts of ways but I thought the way we were able to come out of those periods, turn defence into attack and build our game was a particularly pleasing aspect.”

On his teams resilience, he said: “There was a period at the start of the game where we defended for large parts on our goal line. Hull are a very powerful team, they’ve got a good offload game and strong ball carriers so we had to be very physical. It was a good test of our fitness and organisation defensively, so to come out the other side of that is really positive – for this time of year it was an ideal kind of game.”

The Head Coach also praised the work of his young players in the squad: “Both our wingers are young lads who are going to be ready, they’re the next in the backline this year. We want to give Zach [Eckersley] and Jacob [Douglas] more opportunities so I think they showed today that they are more than up to it.”

The Warriors wore black armbands in tribute to Liam Marshall’s mum Debbie, who sadly passed away yesterday: “It’s a very emotional week for the Club,” Peet said.

“Marshy is the heartbeat of the team and what he has been through this week with the birth of his baby daughter and then to lose his mum Debbie, who was one of the team as well.

“We’re all around for Liam and the rest of his family at this sad time.”

Dupree - On the same page

Tyler Dupree praised Wigan Warriors’ defensive performance following a pre-season victory over Hull FC.

Dupree: “We’ve gelled so much as a team to be on the same page and we’re all looking forward and ready to start the season together.”

Tyler Dupree praised the defensive performance as the Warriors recorded a dominant pre-season victory over Hull FC at the MKM Stadium.

The prop forward was one of seven scorers as the Cherry and Whites produced an emphatic showing against Super League opposition in former Warrior, Scott Taylor’s testimonial match.

Reflecting on the victory, Dupree said: “It was a tough encounter despite what the score suggests as Hull FC brought a massive test. We knew what they’d bring with their massive bodies in the middle, but we showed that we can dig deep and stick at it for longer.”

Dupree was one of seven scorers for the Warriors at the MKM Stadium, and speaking on his try, he said: “It came off the back of some fantastic play from Harry [Smith] for which I’m very grateful for. He just tells me where to run and I make sure to do it before he does the rest.”

Despite an emphatic second half showing, which saw the Warriors score six tries, Dupree directed his praise towards the defensive efforts.

He said: “We know we have the quality to score tries but you cannot lose if you don’t concede. Our main focus is our defence as it’s an area of the game we pride ourselves highly on. This afternoon we showed signs of where we aim to be defensively.

“Keeping any team to nil in any game is big, but to do it after facing continuous sets on the try line is massive. The performance wasn’t squeaky clean as we had errors but to keep Hull FC to nil is a massive achievement for us.”

Reflecting on pre-season, Dupree said: “Personally I’ve really enjoyed pre-season and it was important to dust off a few more cobwebs off. My goal throughout has been working on fitness so that I can play for longer this season. It’s also been massive as I’ve focused on developing as a player in all areas and already I feel in such a strong position compared to last season.”

Looking ahead to the start of the Super League season, Dupree said: “You can’t read too much into friendlies so our focus remains firmly on Castleford in Round One. We’ve gelled so much as a team to be on the same page and we’re all looking forward and ready to start the season together.”

Match Report as Wigan Warriors beat Hull FC in pre-season.

Wigan scored seven tries through seven different scorers at the MKM Stadium.

Wigan Warriors put on a fantastic display to end their pre-season campaign with a win to nil at the MKM Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams came together to celebrate former player, Scott Taylor’s testimonial game.

It was an even contest in the opening forty with both sides offering great attacking and defensive efforts but Wigan took the lead into the break as Jake Wardle scored the only try of the first half, converted by Harry Smith.

Two tries in quick succession from Wigan early in the second half saw Wigan out to 16-0 with scored from Patrick Mago and Bevan French, paired with perfect conversions from Harry Smith. Tyler Dupree, Jacob Douglas, Jack Farrimond and Ryan Hampshire added to the scoring after the hour as Wigan ran out 40-0 winners.

An even start at the MKM saw the hosts go closest in the opening five minutes. A penalty for a dangerous tackle from Wigan allowed Hull deep into Wigan’s half and a last tackle cross-field kick from Walker was seen out of play by Jacob Douglas who was under pressure on the left wing.

Wigan found their way over shortly afterwards as Jacob Douglas slid in at the left corner but referee Jack Smith pulled the effort back for a forward pass in the build-up from Field.

The Warriors turned attack into defence as they did well to deny Hull FC a few minutes later as a charge towards the sticks from Fa’amanu Brown was denied by Kaide Ellis who got his body in the way to get Wigan back in possession.

Wigan had two great opportunities in the 20th minute, Tyler Dupree was held up over the line and in the follow up, a pass from French out to Eckersley had too much on it with the ball going into touch.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as Jake Wardle crossed on the left edge after a good dummy from Harry Smith. Smith converted from the tee to put Wigan 6-0 ahead.

Wigan flew out of the blocks in the second half and extended their lead in the 46th minute as Mago slipped off a few tackles before selling a final dummy to ease over and put the ball down under the sticks. The effort was converted by Smith for 12-0.

Almost immediately, Wigan were in again as a loose ball from Hull landing with Bevan French who weaved his way under the sticks for Wigan’s third. A third successive conversion from the boot of Harry Smith made it 18-0 with half an hour to play.

Hull had a great opportunity on the hour mark to register their first points of the game but Sutcliffe’s looping pass out to Lewis Martin found the turf and Eckersley recovered well to deny Hull any further progress.

Tyler Dupree extended Wigan’s lead in the 62nd minute, Harry Smith providing a perfect pass to send the forward bursting through the defensive line to ease over. Smith continued his fine form from the kicking tee as Wigan made it 24-0.

Jacob Douglas was next to add his name to the score sheet, collecting an excellent looping pass and backing himself to dive over in the left corner. Smith’s conversion attempt from the touchline flashed across the face of the sticks as Wigan led 28-0.

Young Jack Farrimond was introduced to the action in the 67th minute and was immediately involved as he crashed over for Wigan’s sixth try of the afternoon – the half back was in support as Wardle played the ball back inside. Adam Keighran, taking over kicking duties with Smith off the field, converted for 34-0.

Ryan Hampshire was keen to add his name to the list, collecting the ball from the scrum he cut back inside to score close to the uprights, registering Wigan’s seventh try of the afternoon, Keighran slotted the goal once more to complete a convincing 40-0 win for the Warriors in pre-season over Super League opposition.

Smith reacts to Hull FC win

Harry Smith reflected on Wigan Warriors’ pre-season victory over Hull FC at the MKM Stadium.

Smith: “We’ll rest up and review this game before going straight back into training to look at building on this performance.”

Harry Smith reflected on a dominant pre-season display as Wigan Warriors recorded a 40-0 victory over Hull FC at the MKM Stadium.

The half-back featured for the first time in pre-season as Matt Peet’s side scored seven unanswered tries against their Super League counterparts.

Reflecting on the victory in West Hull, Smith said: “Hull FC brought a tough challenge at the start due to our ill-discipline and errors which pinned us in our own half. It presented a good opportunity to practice our goal line defence and keeping them out, which we were able to do in keeping them to zero points.”

In addition to praising the Warriors’ defensive efforts, Smith applauded the attacking performance – especially in the second half which saw Wigan cross for six tries.

Smith said: “Part of friendlies is about getting those combinations and flows right between players ready for when the start of the season comes. We were a bit sloppy in the first half and produced a few too many errors, but we showed in the second that things will come with some nice tries scored.”

Having been named the Player of the Series in England’s Test win over Tonga in the off-season, Smith continued his impressive form at the MKM Stadium as he recorded four assists and as many goals in the 65 minutes he played.

Speaking on the newly formed ‘healthy kicking competition’ with Adam Keighran, who took over the responsibility in the final stages, Smith said: “Adam’s a good lad and I’ve enjoyed working alongside him. I know I need to be on my game week in week out if I want to keep the cone, but it was nice to kick a few over and hopefully I can take that into Round One.”

Reflecting on pre-season, Smith added: “It’s been a bit different as everything has been zero to a hundred but I’ve really enjoyed it. The new players have brought a lot and the lads that played last year still have that belief and energy that got us a Grand Final. If we can take that into these first few games of the season then it will put us in good stead.”

Looking ahead to the Warriors’ first Super League fixture of the season against Castleford Tigers at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle, Smith said: “Pre-season’s been tough but we’ve been working towards this first game. We’ll rest up and review this game before going straight back into training to look at building on this performance.”

“We’ll put together a tough week of training so that we can take it to Castleford as we know it’s a tough ground to go to and that they will be flying.”

Peet provides updates on Wigan Warriors stars
