RFL arrange key meeting with Super League players as strike threat looms

Post by josie andrews »

Players representing all 12 Super League clubs will this week sit down with RFL representatives to discuss concerns over the new tackle rules

Players from all twelve Super League clubs will meet on Wednesday as the Rugby Football League seeks player input surrounding the ongoing changes taking place within the game.

The governing body has come under fire following a controversial start to the Super League season, which has seen players increasingly speak about it during the opening fortnight of the campaign. After Nu Brown's controversial red card, the RFL has confirmed that amendments to the framework relating to head-on-head contacts will be made.

But a string of meetings are still in place this week to go over issues that have arisen in the early weeks of the season. A pre-arranged meeting of head coaches will take place on Wednesday, but players will also get a say in their own meeting.

It comes after Salford Red Devils fullback Ryan Brierley initiated conversations on Friday evening, in which he proposed a meeting of all twelve Super League captains. The feedback from that meeting would then be sent back to the RFL.

When approached by Rugby League Live, Brierley confirmed he had been invited to the proposed meeting, while Alex Walmsley, who wrote a passionate column for Rugby League Live last week, is also set to be on the Zoom call. GMB Union representative Garreth Carvell is also due to attend. It comes at a time when a group of Super League players are known to be considering strike action.

Brierley said: "First and foremost, thank you to Rob Hicks for allowing us the opportunity to have our say. Rob has been brilliant and the buy him from him and clubs has been amazing.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I feel sorry for the players & the referees as they are first in line to get the abuse when it is orders from people at the RFL who probably have never played the game or even touched a rugby ball!!
