Derby day wins at Saints

Post by josie andrews »

The first derby of the 2024 Betfred Super League season gets under way this Friday 29 March, a classic Good Friday tie.

Wigan will be looking to continue their fine start to 2024 as they make the short trip over Billinge Hill to the Totally Wicked Stadium this Friday afternoon.

We take a look back at three memorable Super League victories over Saints away from home:

St Helens 10-28 Wigan, 6 April 2012

Having claimed bragging rights in the final derby clash at Knowsley Road in 2010, the Warriors crossed for five tries to win the first battle between the rivals at Langtree Park.

Darrell Goulding, George Carmont, Sam Tomkins, Gareth Hock and Jeff Lima scored tries, as Josh Charnley added eight points from the tee.

St Helens 14-33 Wigan, 18 April 2014

Yet another memorable Good Friday victory was ensured after Liam Farrell scored in either half to end St Helens’ perfect start to the season.

Saints failed to lead at any point in the contest, as Sean O’Loughlin, Dan Sarginson and Joe Burgess also scored tries in the thriller.

Matty Smith, now part of the Saints backroom staff, maintained a 100 per cent kicking accuracy throughout, as he slotted six goals and a drop goal in the sunshine.

St Helens 10-30 Wigan, 31 August 2018

The Warriors recorded an emphatic derby win on Shaun Wane’s final visit to St Helens as coach.

Wigan led 14-4 at the break after tries from Sarginson (x2) and John Bateman, before Tom Davies, Oliver Gildart and O’Loughlin extended the advantage in the second half.

The Cherry and Whites went on to be crowned Super League champions six weeks later, after defeating Warrington Wolves in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

Tickets for Friday’s Good Friday derby are now sold out. Highlights from previous battles against St Helens are available to watch on Wigan TV HERE.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Why have they missed out 2011 when current captain Liam Farrell scored in the final minute to give us the win.

And this one in 2003 with a team full of youngster

This was a class game, I was in a Blackpool pub watching it on leave from the Army, no one gave us a chance.

Not a win, but the Wigan stand during the 75-0 defeat was bouncing.

Should be another great afternoon for those going.
