Hull FC to play in new format that will see three halves and ten players a side

Post by josie andrews »

Hull FC's scholarship game against Wakefield will take a different look on Wednesday.

Hull FC will take on Wakefield Trinity in a series of modified games of rugby league this Wednesday night. The initiative has been backed by both clubs’ youth departments and is supported by the RFL. It will feature all fit and available players from both scholarship programmes throughout the evening.

The two sides will play on a full 100-metre pitch and contest three 30-minute periods, with 10-minute rest periods after each half an hour played. However, the biggest catch is the number of players per side, with teams containing 10 players each with unlimited substitutions permitted.

Only a maximum of two defenders will be allowed in each tackle, with the defensive team running back seven metres from the given mark, instead of 10. There will be no conversion attempts after tries or kick offs, with the conceding team restarting the game with a play-the-ball on the 20 metre mark. There will also be no scrums with taps instead made after an error or other restart.

Hull FC said in a release: “Under these modified rules, both youth departments are confident that the games will give more opportunities to the young players to promote the fundamental skills of the modern game, alongside helping to develop their vision, game understanding, and further exposure to performing under fatigue.

“The ten-a-side games will be played on a full pitch, so there will be lots of space to both attack and defend. With the retreat only being seven metres, and also limiting the tackle area to a maximum of two defenders in the tackle, this will create lots of different challenges to the players.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
