I got an email a while back from a lady asking about a medal she had passed down to her form her recently passed mother.
My eyes lit up. It dates from the first ever cup final wigan played in, 4 years after wigan's formation in 1879, in 1883 and was awarded to John Maledy, who played as a forward for the Pagefield club that day - Wigan won.
It is a silver runners up medal made by Vaughton & Sons of Birmingham and I believe it to be, after having a good look around, one of the earliest rugby medals from Lancashire still in existence. If not, the sport of rugby.

Brilliant Marc
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
