Warriors Academy take victory in Warrington

MATCH REPORT AS WIGAN WARRIORS ACADEMY TAKE VICTORY AGAINST WARRINGTON WOLVES ACADEMY

Wigan Warriors Academy scored four tries either side of half-time at the Halliwell Jones Stadium to defeat Warrington Wolves Academy.

Josh Cartwright and Austin Daniel each crossed twice, while Jack Purtill, Leo Wadsworth, Dylan Kelly-Duffy and Nathan Lowe also touched down for the Warriors. Jack Farrimond impressed both on the field and from the tee, converting six of the eight tries.

The young Warriors side was lightning quick out of the blocks, threatening the Warrington defence from the off. That pressure would soon count, as Josh Cartwright crashed down in the right corner to open the scoring. Jack Farrimond nailed a fantastic touchline conversion to give the Warriors an early 6-0 lead.

From the resulting kick off, Trent Kelly-Duffy did well to gather the ball as it bounced in front of him, catching the Wolves defence off-guard to break away. Despite the forward being caught deep into Warrington territory, the resulting set ended up in the hands of Charlie Yeomans, who sent a wonderful looping pass the way of Austin Daniel to touch down and score in the left corner. Farrimond was tasked with kicking from the opposite touchline this time, and his effort sailed just wide of the posts.

The following 20 minutes saw both sides miss chances, with several promising sets going begging through handling errors. Eventually, Warrington would make one of their opportunities worthwhile, with a second repeat set for a high tackle ending in Daniel Regan powering through the Warriors defence to score. Joseph Hickey added the extras, cutting the Warriors score down to four.

However, Farrimond’s resulting kick off would bounce into touch, presenting the Warriors with a golden opportunity to respond just 10 metres out. With Kian McDermott coming close, the ball found the hands of Farrimond on the final tackle, whose kick was perfectly timed for Cartwright to catch and score his second of the afternoon from the right wing. The scrum-half then added the extras from out wide to remain instrumental in cancelling out Warrington’s try.

As half-time closed in, Farrimond looked to work some magic once again, but was tripped upon attempting to chase his own kick towards Warrington’s goal-line. A penalty was awarded, and after Charlie Yeomans came close to powering through, Jack Purtill dived over from dummy-half to score. Farrimond converted, giving the Warriors a 22-6 lead at the break

John Dufty’s side would continue as they left off in the second-half, once again scoring early on. Leo Wadsworth powered through the Wolves defence to dive under the posts, with Farrimond good again from the tee.

Minutes later, Finlay Yeomans would present another chance for the Warriors to create some breathing room from their opponents, as he broke from inside his own half to cross the field and almost go the distance before being tackled. With the set in a great position as a result, the ball found Dylan Kelly-Duffy, who powered through the middle to score. Farrimond converted to take the Warriors past 30 on the day.

However, with more than enough time still remaining in the second half, the Wolves clawed back a couple of tries in quick succession to regain a foothold in the affair. Hickey pounced on a loose ball to score the first, before Lewis Barratt wrestled off a number of defenders to score the second by the posts. Hickey converted both to make it 34-18.

Moments later, the game would tighten up even more. Cai Taylor-Wray broke through and looked to be going the distance before being caught, but the Wolves would still profit through Daniel Hackney scoring in the corner. Despite a missed conversion from Hickey, the lead was suddenly down to just two-scores.

With their backs to the wall for a short but dangerous period, the Warriors finally found a way out. With a well-worked attack edging them closer to the Warrington goal-line, the ball found Nathan Lowe, who paced through the defence and crashed down to score on the left-hand side. Farrimond was good again from the tee, taking the Warriors’ total to 40.

With the game nearing it’s end, the Cherry and Whites would make sure of their victory. Daniel finished a strong attack off in the corner to score his second of the match, with Farrimond’s conversion hitting the post from out wide.

Just before full-time, an entertaining affair with a full-time score of 44-22 to the Warriors would reach a disappointing conclusion. With tensions high on the pitch, a second scuffle in a matter of minutes between the teams saw Charlie Yeomans and Cartwright dismissed by the referee for Wigan, while Warrington’s Zack Gardner was shown red.
