Ryan Hampshire decision made as agent confirms plan for Wigan Warriors talent

Post by josie andrews »

Hampshire is off-contract at the end of the season.

Ryan Hampshire will leave Wigan Warriors for a new challenge at the end of the season. It has been confirmed that the 29-year-old will head for pastures new in 2025, with Hampshire to leave the Super League champions once his contract expires at the end of the season.

Arriving at the club ahead of the 2023 season for a second spell with the club, Hampshire was drafted in to provide competition for places across the backs for the likes of Jai Field and Bevan French.

He has made 12 appearances under Matt Peet since, scoring four tries. However, his agent, Craig Harrison confirmed on the House of League podcast that Hampshire would leave the club to pursue more regular playing opportunities at another club.

There's no doubt that journey has ended," Harrison said. "That's been agreed by both parties. Rocky has loved every minute and Matty has been great with him, Matty is loyal to Ryan. In my opinion, that's what makes Matty special, he's a very loyal kid.

"I think Rocky has got another ten years. I think the Rocky you saw at Wakey, Leigh and the others, that's not the Rocky Wigan have seen since he's come back. But it's a journey he wanted to do and he felt he had unfinished business there. He did it, now he's out of contract, he wants a club and wants to play six or one. He can cover wing so you can have a little bit of utility.

He wants to play regularly; he's actually injured at the minute, he played busted for Wigan the last two or three games but he did it for the love of the club and wanted to show Matty a bit of loyalty. He moves on, Wigan move on with nothing but thanks from Rocky and myself. What Matty did, I'll never forget.

"We were looking at the end of that year to get Rocky something and we'd refused a few deals, I think he wanted to win something, I think he wanted to do that. Now he wants to play regularly again and has a lot of desire to still play at that level."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

To be honest he is not the Wigan standard we demand. must have been a cheap option to cover injuries. I wish the lad all the best he has a place in RL but sadly not at Wigan
