London Broncos close in on takeover with club's future finally secure

Post by josie andrews »

The Broncos are set to receive welcome news.

London Broncos' future appears to have been resolved, with the club on the brink of a takeover. Rugby League Live understands the Broncos are on the verge of being under new ownership, with investment coming from overseas.

Late last year, long-serving owner David Hughes decided to step down from his position at the club after 27 years, leaving the club facing an uncertain future. Hughes had provided significant financial support to the Broncos during his time in charge.

Since then, London, who were demoted from Super League at the end of the last season based on IMG scores, have been seeking new investment that would allow them to have a clear long-term future.

That has now materialised and in a further development, Rugby League Live has been told that a senior administrator currently holding a role at a Super League club will be taking on a position within the Broncos setup moving forward. However, it has been decided not to publish the identity of that person at this time.

Regardless, it is welcome news for the Broncos, who were facing an uncertain future given the substantial financial funding that has been relied upon for many years. The club has regularly relocated to various regions of the city but is now playing out of Wimbledon at Plough Lane.

Head coach Mike Eccles has remained loyal to the club in the off-season, despite job offers elsewhere, and will continue in the role and is now tasked with putting together a squad for the upcoming season.

While a large number of the club's players from last season have now departed, London have managed to retain some and have secured some new signings ahead of the campaign, adding Huw Worthing, Ben Hursey-Hord and Connor O'Beirne to their ranks.

Further signings will be required but with a takeover now imminent, that appears likely to accelerate ahead of the new campaign.

Agree 100%, a presence in London is something that would help the game. This must be VFM and we need focus on the heartlands and getting secure presence in cities such as Salford/Manchester, Bradford and Wakefield is another key aim.

Leeds Rhinos chief Gary Hethrington involved in London Broncos takeover effort

LONDON BRONCOS are being helped to find new investors by Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington.

Reports have suggested that London will be bought by a consortium of Australian investors, and while Hetherington has denied that he will leave his current position at Leeds, he has admitted that he is trying in a private capacity to help the Broncos find new owners.

“I spoke to David Hughes when he announced that he would end his interest in the Broncos and I discussed where new owners might come from,” Hetherington told League Express.

“There are people in the market, particularly in Australia, who are interested in buying sporting brands and a club based in London would have an obvious attraction.”

Hetherington is reluctant to give details of the progress he has made, although some reports suggest that a deal may be completed by the end of the month.

Any new ownership of the club is likely to transform the perception of the Broncos, particularly if funds are made available to acquire new players.

Last week the Broncos reported that their major sponsor, the drinks industry company BrewDog, will continue as the club’s title sponsor for the new season.

The Aberdeenshire-based company, which had a turnover of £366 million in 2023, first sponsored the Broncos last season and the continuation of that sponsorship is positive news for the club after the departure of Hughes at the end of last season.

Lynsey Coleman, London Broncos’ commercial and marketing executive, said: “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with BrewDog as our main sponsor for the 2025 season.

“BrewDog has been an incredible supporter of London Broncos and their passion for innovation and community aligns perfectly with our own values.

“BrewDog’s continued commitment demonstrates their belief in what we’re building here at the club and we’re excited to carry this momentum forward into the new season.”

The Broncos will play their first game of the season in the second round of the Challenge Cup on Saturday against Goole, with the game kicking off at 12.30pm at Rosslyn Park and streamed by BBC Sport.

Great to hear positive news about the Broncos. A strong presence in London adds significant value to the game. The Broncos also do excellent work developing amateur players in the South East.
