No disagreement - I'd never claim that the salary cap evened up standards, just that it was supposed to: "the idea was to even up standards".thegimble wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 5:52 pmDisagree on 1 point. Salary cap did not even up the standards it even downed them. Otherwise great postmorley pie eater wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 5:05 pm A different point of view from me - no surprise!
It's more in the form of asking questions and making observations, as nobody really has all the answers.
Hearn's problem is that darts, boxing and snooker are individual sports, so his methods don't apply. Similarly references to the NFL structures: they were already one of the major sports in Australia, and don't have the dominance of soccer that we have. Union is struggling here too, and only keeps going due to income from the international game I've I've understood correctly.
I think we made a mistake, albeit well-intentioned, with the salary cap. The idea was to stop clubs going bust and even up standards. I suggest we should focus on clubs only spending what they can afford, but let those with rich owners spend as much as they like.
If 1, 2 or 3 teams dominate through this system, then let them. I offer in evidence Celtic and Rangers. There are teams in the Scottish Premiership who are as poor and well supported as Salford or Huddersfield. What would happen to Scottish football if they adopted a salary cap?
If Mike Danson and others were allowed to spend, we might see some stars. Many many people know Offiah, Edwards and the rest from when we dominated the league and won 8 cup finals in a row. We also got recognition and coverage at SPOTY and the lines of the Middlesex 7s. And if we did it again, Sky would be bidding more to cover the game - it was us under Uncle Mo who attracted them to RL in the first place.
If Wigan got to this level again, other millionaire owners may be tempted to throw their hat, and their money, into the ring. What incentive do they have under the current system?

I agree and and the above flagged subject title is "not news". I'm heading dangerously close to my 90's : been watching Wigan since the 50's this was parroted even then but RL isStill being played and hopefully see me out and like a creaking gate will continue to do so Teds succinct.post hits the nail on the head. But it's a challenge we can't meet It's nothing the RL can do about it although they have valiantly tried and to their credit continue to do soThey can't create, or drum up demand mfor our sport. The likes of Eddie Hearn,Jim Radcliffe and other "movers and shakers "see no money in it for them personally Soccer has captured that vast market. Even people who comment on Soccer eg Liniker was on over 3 million plus illustrates the value of "crate eggs" to large media outlets. what chance have RL/RFU gotWe have agreat game. Lets just enjoy it Wether amateur semi professional or whateverWiganer Ted wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 12:44 pm We have the players who have the ability to be stars.
The reason that they are not is the lack of media profile.
This is a real challenge for the RFL/SL.

It just sticks in my craw the way Union is lionised in the media; the way the 6N talked up as if it is the greatest sporting contest on earth, the money that flocks to it... but of course, they all played union at uni...
And Eddie Hearn, who ended up not being offered money by the RFL, who preferred to throw it at IMG, shows a typical lack of class with his comments. You are not involved with the sport, Eddie, why do you think people are interested in your thoughts?

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
