Re: Warriors to face Sheffield in Challenge Cup
I don’t know how Sheffield Eagles would ever survive in a SL environment!
They have been so overwhelmed for tickets for this game that their system crashed yesterday!
Phoned yesterday & spoke to the ‘main’ guy. Wanted two disabled tickets one ambulant & for one wheelchair plus two carers, simple enough you would say.
"You will get a link via email to redeem tickets & pay". Easy enough!
Email arrived with just the two carers tickets redeemed them but phoned again to say there are no disabled tickets for the ambulant or wheelchair people.
Same guy, "Sorry the system has crashed" this was at 10.17am. They only went on sale at 10am.
"I will phone you back this afternoon & sort it".
I phoned him back at 3pm & said I still need the two tickets for the disabled supporters & to pay for them.
"Leave it with me, I’ll do that now".
Today, I phoned again at 10.50am." Hello still not got an email for the two disabled tickets"!
"Oh sorry I’ll do that now. What is you email address??"
Gave him the email address again "Right, just done that & the tickets will be in the email to redeem & to pay".
FFS! I couldn’t be arsed phoning back again as it is clear as bloody day they have no idea!
Yes I’ve got the two extra tickets for the two disabled people. But they are on a different row & 32 seats away from their carers seats!! What a fecking palaver!

Craig Lingard explains plan to beat ‘best in the world’ Wigan Warriors despite injury crisi
Sheffield Eagles head coach Craig Lingard has labelled Friday night’s Challenge Cup opponents Wigan Warriors as the “best team in the world” and outlined the club’s plans to beat them despite the Championship’s side current injury crisis.
Lingard confirmed that signings Morgan Smith and Corey Johnson will both miss Round Three of the Challenge Cup meaning the Eagles are without either of their hookers that they recruited from Super League. Meanwhile, full-back Matty Marsh is injured meaning a likely debut for Jack Walker.
Facing the media and asked how he felt about the prospect of facing the 2024 quadruple winners, Lingard quipped: “Like you said, they’re quite good, aren’t they? They’re the best team in the world
He added: “I was sick of seeing them last year at Castleford, I think we played them four times in the first half of the season, I thought I’d got away from playing them this year but now we’ve drawn them in the cup.”
Wigan Warriors and Sheffield Eagles Team News
As he began to assess the game, he labelled it a “free hit” with the former Castleford Tigers boss claiming that his side still are not at 100% and will likely use this and their early Championship games as trials to find their stride.
Lingard argued: “It’s a free hit for us, I know that’s one of them statements that people will say when you’re playing against a team that’s in a higher division than you but that’s exactly what it is for us, it’s a free hit.
We want to go and test ourselves against a real good team and we can build towards what is ultimately our goal this year which is the Championship season.”
Craig Lingard outlines the way to beat Wigan Warriors
Sheffield will be rank outsiders at home on Friday night but the 4G pitch could play a factor according to Lingard as he hopes to emulate John Kear’s 1998 side and cause a huge upset, albeit not at Wembley.
Asked about why Wigan Warriors are the dominant force that they are, Lingard named them as the shining example for all clubs to follow before explaining what he learned from when he crossed paths with Matt Peet’s side in 2024.
On the key to the Warriors’ success, he joked: “I guess if everybody knew that then everybody would be copying it, wouldn’t they? I think it’s just the way the club has been run over a number of years and how they’ve developed their own players, how they’ve recruited the world-class players that they have done.
“I think it’s a shining example of how a rugby league club should be run. It’s an example for everybody else involved in Rugby League in the UK of how a club should be run.”
Specifically on how to beat Wigan Warriors, he laid out the blueprint as such: “You can’t take any shortcuts, I think if you look for shortcuts then you find that taking a shortcut ends up being the longest way around. You’ve got to make sure you’re really clinical in your execution, your defence has got to be good, you’ve got to have at least 50% of the ball against these sort of teams.
“I think if you go in with the attitude that you’re going to outscore a team like Wigan then you’re going to get beat quite easily so you’ve got to go in with an attitude that you’re going to try and out defend them.”
Sheffield Eagles injury crisis revealed ahead of Challenge Cup clash
The difference between outlining the plan ad enacting it is massive and putting it to paper will be very tough for Sheffield given their injury issues which Lingard labelled as a “little bit of an injury crisis”, explaining: “We’ve got six injured at the moment in time and no hookers. Corey Johnson’s out, Reiss Butterworth’s out so we’ve got a little bit of an injury crisis early on this season.
“The majority of the fallout is from injuries from last season or operations from last season but we lost Corey Johnson to a training injury against Hunslet last week. We’re just waiting for him to see a specialist on a head injury because it’s his second one in a short period of time.
“Reiss Butterworth damaged his jaw and his teeth in the friendly against Doncaster, so he’s out for between six to eight weeks and then we’ve got several injuries that are carry-overs from last season as well that we’re contending with.
“At this moment in time, I think we’re down to about 19 to 20 players, so there’s going to be some people who are going to have to play out of position I would imagine this week.”
The former Castleford Tigers boss is also expecting a very strong Wigan side to turn up at the Olympic Legacy Park, explaining that the pre-season loss to Leeds Rhinos could have helped to fuel up Matt Peet as the Warriors begin their Challenge Cup defence.
Lingard said: “Whatever team Wigan will play will be an outstanding team, I’d imagine they will come full strength.
“You can’t read too much into friendlies but they got beat by Leeds in a friendly and I’d imagine knowing Wigan and Matty Peet, they will want to put that right so they’ll come with a full-strength side and build towards that Las Vegas game.”
Sheffield Eagles 20-Man Squad: Jones-Bishop, Welham, Glover, Dawson-Jones, Aston, Battye, Dickinson, Farrell, Gwaze, Hodgson, Broadbent, Clark, Bussey, Peachey, Millar, Matongo, Foster, Roberts, Billy, Walker
Wigan Warriors 21-Man Squad: Field, Keighran, Marshall, French, Smith, Thompson, Nsemba, Farrell, Ellis, Mago, Byrne, Leeming, Dupree, Hill, Walters, Eckersley, Forber, Farrimond, Douglas, Makin, Kerr

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Re: Warriors to face Sheffield in Challenge Cup
Wigan Warriors boss explains Sheffield Eagles selection call and gives honest Challenge Cup take
Matt Peet has moved to explain his decision to leave a handful of key men out of his Wigan Warriors squad to take on Sheffield Eagles on Friday. The Cherry and Whites make the trip to South Yorkshire this week as they get their Challenge Cup defence underway.
The game represents Wigan’s first competitive run out of the season, after friendlies against Oldham and Leeds Rhinos in January and Peet has named a squad that can be considered to be close to full strength to face the Championship side. However, there are a number of notable absentees with Ethan Havard, Abbas Miski and Jake Wardle among those sitting out.
Havard and Miski weren’t involved at Headingley after returning from injury during pre-season and while Sean O’Loughlin outlined his belief after that friendly game that both would be fit for the start of the season, they miss out. Wardle played in that game, but he won’t be taking on the Eagles either, with Peet admitting Sheffield’s artificial pitch was a factor in his selection.
It’s more with an eye on the surface,” Peet told Serious About RL when asked about those absentees. “Coming off the Leeds game I think everyone would like to play but that surface at Sheffield, a few players don’t respond great from that artificial stuff so we’ve taken them out this week.”
Wigan met the Eagles at the Brick Community Stadium in last season’s Challenge Cup, with the Cherry and Whites progressing to the quarter-finals after a 44-18 win. However, they certainly didn’t have it all their own way in that game and Peet is prepared for another tough evening.
“They gave us a real game last year, at half-time it was very close, we might have even been behind so we know what to expect in terms of their physicality,” he added. “They’ve got some former Super League players and very strong ball carriers in particular.
“Cory Aston is a smart half as well. They’re a proud club, I think the fans will be excited and we know we have a proper game on our hands.”
While Wigan will take on Championship opposition, three Super League sides have been pitched against community clubs, with Leeds Rhinos, Hull FC and St Helens taking on Wests Warriors, York Acorn and West Hull respectively.
Asked how he feels about such a concept, Peet said: “I’m not sure to be honest. I like it as an idea and a notion but I do have concerns about amateurs being on the same field as professionals physically.
“They’ve got to go to work on Monday morning and they’re playing against from freakish athletes and physical boys. I’m not sure where I stand on that.
“I understand the planning behind it at the start and giving the Championship teams home games against Super League teams is fantastic but I don’t think we should be seeing a situation where it’s amateurs against professionals.”

Don't forget Josie these people are from Yorkshirejosie andrews wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 11:47 am I don’t know how Sheffield Eagles would ever survive in a SL environment!
What a fecking palaver!![]()
