I spoke with Matty at the pre-season dinner and he told me that the way Wigan do things is on a higher level all across the club. 😀
I know, he’s said that to me before. I’ve been friends with him & his wife since he was here last. He told me he was coming back a couple of days before the Grand Final but my lips were sealed 🤐🤐 😂😂
Well done keeping the secret.
I never repeat what I’ve been told in confidence, even Stephen never gets told owt 😂😂

Jonny Vaughan is a good prospect? I understand he was/is England Academy captain and got MoM in Reserves Grand Final against us?

He did indeed. Looking on twitter at Saints fans it seems a 50/50 split on those saying he won't ever be good enough and those getting very angry at the club for letting him get signed elsewhere.

Hes been given the 24 shirt this season so I'm guessing they planned on him getting a bit of game time after seeing 9 appearances last season. Wouldn't surprise me if he gets loaned out for the season now. Don't see them giving him gametime when he's coming over to the better side of the hill

i had to comment on one of my Saints friends facebook post last night

he wrote war and peace, about how they had disrespected the club, how Matty Peet and Wigan were at their old tricks again etc etc. Wigan had secretly signed them so they could get their tactics (really    )

so a simple, they were out of contract, the rules have changed and they are / were allowed to speak to other clubs, hence Liam Byrne announcing he leaving Wigan a couple of weeks back

I also pointed out that he should look more closely at how his club were being run, 17 players out of contract along with 1st team coach at the end of this season. numerous players re-signed based on sentiment and not playing form, and that finally he should stop believing everything he reads on forums and social media :) :)

That view changed when Vaughan signed for Wigan, before that he was part of the golden generation and being promoted by the same fans as a centre, at the expense of Hurrell, or in the backrow instead of Batchelor/Whitby.

Wigan boss Matt Peet’s simple response to links with St Helens pair

WIGAN WARRIORS head coach Matt Peet has given a simple response to links with St Helens pair Jonny Vaughan and Dayon Sambou.

Last week, All Out Rugby League revealed that Wigan had snapped up the Saints pair, with deals expected to have been signed from 2026 onwards.

Of course, with the new rulings in place, those players out of contract the following season can now negotiate with rival clubs from November instead of the following May.

However, in his weekly press conference, Warriors boss Peet issued a simple response when asked if the club had signed the 19-year-olds.

Peet said: “I think, as a general rule, not commenting on other peoples’ players has served me well.”

With Willie Isa leaving the Warriors to link up with Chelsea FC as player welfare and development officer, Wigan are down one pack man for the 2025 Super League season.

That being said, Peet does not foresee bringing anyone else in for the remainder of the season.

“We won’t be looking to add anyone,” Peet continued. “We don’t have room to do it.

“Obviously we don’t have Willie anymore but more of our attention is on retention now.”

It would suggest that Wigan have no space on the salary cap for 2025 but that can only be the case if Isa’s salary has been used upgrading contracts that have not yet been announced.

I am not sure that is true either unless we are upgrading contracts for the current year which never really happens to my knowledge. Its always for future years.

I think one of the following is possible:

1 - We have space but are not recruiting
2 - We have space this year but things look tight next year (contract upgrades etc)
3 - We don't have space because we have signed a replacement (Why would Peet lie)
Bomhead - "Lockers to prop."

I think we will have quite a bit of room within the salary cap next season. Isa has retired, Byrne is off to Wire and, on the face of it, it looks like Field and Keighran will return to Australia. It looks like a mini recruit ment drive will be on the menu.
