Willie Isa set for shock new role with Premier League giants after his abrupt retirement from Rugby League last month

The 36-year-old back row announced his retirement from sport last month
Isa won three Super League titles and World Club Challenge with Wigan Warriors

Willie Isa stunned the world of rugby league when he abruptly announced his retirement from the sport last month - despite signing a contract extension at Wigan Warriors.

At the time, his club said the decorated Samoan was departing to ‘pursue a new opportunity’.

And Inside Sport can now reveal that the new opportunity is at Chelsea Football Club.

In a move few may have seen coming, Isa is to swap sports to become player support and development officer at Stamford Bridge, and will have a broad range of responsibilities.

The 36-year-old back-rower, who won three Super League titles and a World Club Challenge with Wigan, is known for his leadership skills and has been a role model over a decade with the cherry and whites.

Isa will work closely with head of men’s operations and welfare Kevin Campello and his time will be dedicated largely to player co-ordination around training and match days, with his new employer committed to growing support for its players across all teams.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I think Chelsea should play him, they need a bit of steel in mid-field.
